SVC V5.1.0.x Cluster Nodes May Repeatedly Reboot When Performing Multiple Image Mode Migration Commands on the Same VDisk

Flashes (Alerts)

Abstract

On a SVC cluster running V5.1.0.x code, if an image mode VDisk is migrated to new MDisks twice in succession, all nodes in the cluster will assert (reboot) simultaneously.

Content

The problem will occur when an image mode VDisk is migrated (using svctask migratetoimage) to a different MDisk twice (i.e. migrated to image mode on one MDisk, then subsequently migrated to image mode on another MDisk).

The exact behaviour of the cluster in this scenario depends on the IDs of the MDisks involved:

  • If source_mdisk_id < target_mdisk_id, this will result in all cluster nodes rebooting simultaneously.
  • If target_mdisk_id < source_mdisk_id, all nodes will enter a cycle of repeated reboots.

Fix

It is recommended that the use of svctask migratetoimage be avoided if the source VDdisk is already an image mode VDisk. Please contact IBM support if there is a requirement to perform such an action.

This problem will be resolved in a future SVC release.
