Getting started with the IBM SurePOS 700 (4800-7x4)

Purpose:

    The purpose of this document is to assist IBM customers and business partners with understanding and using the IBM 4800-7x4 SurePOS 700 system. The document is intended to:
    • Provide an overview of the new model enhancements.
    • Define key technical information useful in adopting the platform.
    • Identify valuable links to obtain additional information.
    • Assist with resolving hardware and software challenges.

4800-7x4 Introduction and Overview:
    The IBM SurePOS 700 family, the 4800-7x4, constitutes a significant technological and functional enhancement to the previous SurePOS 700 product line. This premium POS system can help make your retail environment the best it can be with several new retail-hardened SurePOS 700 Series models.

Key Product Enhancements:

    New SurePOS™ 780 Models 784, E84, and C84 offer a choice of Intel® processors and the latest technology advancements. Highlights include:
    • Superior Intel technology -- choose Pentium® Dual Core E5300 or Core 2 Duo E7400
    • 1 GB DDR3 base memory, expandable to 8 GB (32-bit OS environments can not address above 4 GB)
    • Enhanced graphics for dual display
    • 250 GB SATA hard drive standard
    • Easy-to-wake, energy saving deep sleep

    • Tool-free, front entry serviceability

Model Offerings:
    All models of the IBM SurePOS 700 Series now feature IBM Light-Path Management and IBM Remote Management Agent for proactive monitoring and remote updates. These industry-leading technologies help keep systems running smoothly, while reducing IT management costs.

    All models also feature a virtually tool-free design that offers easy serviceability through secure front access to the system unit. This allows store employees to replace units and swap out parts quickly and easily -- helping to ensure maximum uptime and reduce service costs. An optional cable arm provides complete front-side access to rear cabling without having to move the system unit from its normal position at the POS, further enhancing serviceability.

    Ultimately, these features help retailers reduce management and service costs while delivering the flexibility businesses need to respond to changing trends and marketplaces with a compelling customer experience.

    4800-784
    Designed for a thick client environment, the SurePOS 780 offers high-end technology and hard drive standard so that you are ready to load the latest OS and applications. The 4800-784 offers an Intel Pentium Dual Core E5300 with an option to upgrade to the Core 2 Duo E7400, 250 GB SATA HDD standard, and 1 GB DDR3 base memory.

    4800-E84
    Model E84 is identical to Model 784 except Model E84 is preloaded with a Windows operating system, your choice of Embedded POSReady or Windows XP Professional SP3. The Model E84 offers an Intel Pentium Dual Core E5300 with an option to upgrade to the Core 2 Duo E7400, 250 GB SATA HDD standard, and 1 GB DDR3 base memory.

    4800-C84
    The controller offering provides a comprehensive back-office hardware solution designed for the high-demand retail environment. The controller is based on the performance model, equipped with a standard configuration that adapts to a server environment by including an optical drive and removing the SurePorts. The enhanced 4800-C84 offers an Intel Pentium Dual Core E5300 with an option to upgrade to the Core 2 Duo E7400, 1 GB DDR3 base memory, 250 GB SATA HDD standard, DVD burner standard, and no SurePorts. In the US the system ships with a PC 101-key keyboard.

    Light Path Management
    The 7x4 models are the first point of sale systems from IBM to leverage server technology to increase serviceability, reliability and uptime. Utilizing a dedicated service processor, the POS is continually monitored on all critical operating parameters.     Trusted Platform Module
    Trusted Platform Module (TPM) feature is key to a hardware enforced tamper proof system. The TPM functions are starting to be incorporated in operating systems like Windows Vista utilizing Bitlocker software and Linux security module to secure data and platform protection. Dimensional Information:
    The following table provides a comparative summary of the dimensions and weights associated with the 4800-7x4. No significant dimensional changes between the previous models and the new 7x4 models. New models are 3 lbs lighter due to reduced cabling and cooling components.

    Required Chipset Drivers:
      The following chipset drivers are required on the 4800-7x4 models. The driver install packages may be obtained online -> http://www.ibm.com/support/dlsearch.wss?rs=219&r=30&q=DWN4800-7x4

      Please note that system drivers must be installed in the order listed below and a reboot is recommended after each package has been installed. Each driver package contains its own installation instructions. The default settings provided during the installation are sufficient.
