IBM i ACS 5250 Personal Communications HACL Automation Object Programming Support

Question & Answer

Question

Does the IBM i Access Client Solutions 5250 emulator provide the same 5250 HACL Automation Object programming support that the IBM Personal Communcations based IBM i Access for Windows PC5250 emualtor did?

Answer

The Host Access Class Library (HACL) support that was included with the IBM i Access for Windows r7.1 PC5250 Emulator is the same support as that provided by the IBM Personal Communications 6.0.0 product as the IBM i Access for Windows PC5250 emulator was shared code with the 5250 emulator provided with the larger Personal Communications product.

Here is the Knowledge Center article on on that Personal Communications 6.0.0 capability:
     https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/en/SSEQ5Y_6.0.0/com.ibm.pcomm.doc/books/html/host_access08.htm

The IBM i Access Client Solutions 5250 emulator does not provide the same HACL Automation Object (autECL) support for programming interaction with Visual Basic as the IBM i Access for Windows PC5250 emulator did.

The emulation programming interfaces that the IBM i Access Client Solutions 5250 emulator currently provides are EHLLAPI and Host On Demand macro scripting.

The IBM i Access Client Solutions 5250 Emulator support for EHLLAPI programming is discussed in this document:

The IBM i Access Client Solutions 5250 Emulator support for Host on Demand macro scripting is discussed in this document:

If neither of these IBM i Access Client Solutions 5250 emulation programming environments meet your needs, particularly if you absolutely need to continue with the IBM Personal Communication HACL (autECL) support you will need to move to purchasing the Personal Communications emulation product that provides that capability.

While IBM i Access Client Solutions as a new product, was designed to provide replacement or equivalent capability in most areas, it also had some design goals, primarily being platform independent and relying on Java that does mean that there will not be complete one to one function replacement and this is one of those areas.
