How to install/update the IBM Installation Manager product on IBM i OS using the IBM Web Administration for i GUI

Question/Answer

Question

How do you update the IBM Installation Manager product on the IBM i OS using the IBM Web Administration for i GUI?

Answer

PRE-REQUISITES: Please ensure the following pre-requisites are met before proceeding with the installation of the Installation Manager product via the IBM Web Administration GUI.

1) The 57xxJV1 Option 14 LPP is required to be fully installed BEFORE you upgrade to IM v1.8.0.0-1.8.9.3.  57xxJV1 Option 16 LPP is required to be fully installed BEFORE you upgrade to IM v1.8.9.4 or later.

You can display your currently installed 57xxJV1 LPP options using GO LICPGM Option 10, Press F11 twice to view the Product Option column, and then scroll down and locate your 57xxJV1 Licensed Program.

If 57xxJV1 Option 14 is not currently installed, please refer to the following URL for information on how to download and install the JDK 7.0 32 bit LPP on the IBM i OS.
http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=nas8N1011217

If 57xxJV1 Option 16 is not currently installed, please refer to the following URL for information on how to download and install the JDK 8.0 32bit LPP on the IBM i OS.
https://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=nas8N1020692

2) IBM i 7.3 requires IBM Installation Manager v1.8.4 or later to be installed.  IBM i 7.4 requires IBM Installation Manager v1.8.9.4 or later to be installed.

3) When updating via the Internet, the IBM i will require your network firewall allow outbound connections from the IBM i to the host, public.dhe.ibm.com, over port 80. The external IP address for the public.dhe.ibm.com host is 170.225.15.12.

Host: public.dhe.ibm.com
IP: 170.225.15.112

You can test your network connection by executing the following TELNET command. The session should remain input inhibited. You can then use a different 5250 session to look at NETSTAT *CNN to see if the connect to remote port 80 is ESTABLISHED. This would indicate a successful connection through your network. If the connection is not successful, the following message will be returned and displayed in your device session's job log.

TCP3436 - No response from remote host system within open time-out.

4) If the IM product is currently installed and its current version is 1.7.4.x, there is a known defect preventing the Internet upgrade option from completing successfully.

As a result, if your current version is 1.7.4.x, you will need to upgrade manually using the instructions in the document, How to Download and Install/Upgrade the IBM Installation Manager (IM) for the IBM i .

This issue does not exist with v1.7.3.x and earlier or with 1.8.x and later!!! If you are at one of these IM versions, you can proceed with upgrading the IM product via the Internet using the instructions below.

Steps to check your IM version
1) STRQSH
2) /QIBM/ProdData/InstallationManager/eclipse/tools/imcl -version

5) In order to update the IBM Installation Manager (IM) product via the Internet, the IM product must already be installed. If you are installing the IM product for the first time, you have the option of either installing the IM product manually or installing it via the IBM Web Administration GUI. Please refer to the following IBM Technical Document for more information on how to download and install the IM product manually.

  • - Use Internet to upgrade

    NOTE: If the IM product is currently installed and its current version is 1.7.4.x, there is a known defect preventing the Internet upgrade option from completing successfully.

    ================================================================

    When you are ready to update your Installation Manager product, select the radio button next to "Use Internet to upgrade" and click the Update button.

    After clicking the Update button, a pop-up window showing "Installing IBM Installation Manager" will be displayed indicating the IM product is currently being installed.

    Once the installation process completes, the screen will refresh and the recently installed Installation Manager product version will be displayed when clicking on Manage -> Installations -> Tools -> Installation Manager.

  • - Local Installation Manager package

    When installing the Installation Manager product for the first time or updating it using a local installation manager package repository on the IBM i IFS, you can use either the repositories provided with the WAS Group PTFs (WAS v9.0 Not applicable) under /QIBM/WAS/IMFIXPACKS/IM/<version>/FIXPACK/ or you can download the repository from IBM Fix Central and restore it to a directory in the IBM i IFS.

    • - Repository provided with the WAS Group PTF

      WAS Group PTF
      You can locate what IM repositories exist on your IBM i server using the following command.

      WRKLNK '/QIBM/WAS/IMFIXPACKS/IM/*'

      The above command will list each IM version available to be installed.

      NOTE: If this directory structure does not exist, then you have never applied a WAS v8.0 or v8.5 Group PTF to your IBM i OS. In this case, IBM recommends you follow the instructions under "Repository downloaded from IBM Fix Central" instead or apply the WAS Group PTF.

      In the following example, the highlighted version, 1.8.6.1 is the latest version available.

      Here is the full path to the IM installation package .
      /QIBM/WAS/IMFIXPACKS/IM/<version>/FIXPACK/

      In this example, you would specify the above IFS path when prompted for the Installation Manager Package or when selecting the "Use installer packages on local system to upgrade " option.
      ================================================================================================

      First time installation:

      Location = /QIBM/WAS/IMFIXPACKS/IM/18600120170428_1156/FIXPACK

      Update existing installation:

      Location = /QIBM/WAS/IMFIXPACKS/IM/18600120170428_1156/FIXPACK
      =====================================

      After clicking the Install or Update button, a pop-up window showing "Installing IBM Installation Manager" will be displayed indicating the IM product is currently being installed.

      Once the installation process completes, the screen will refresh and the recently installed Installation Manager product version will be displayed when clicking on Manage -> Installations -> Tools -> Installation Manager.

      • - How to prepare the IM repository for installation

        1. Locate the agent.installer.os400.motif.ppc_x.x.xxx.xxxx_xxx.zip OR com.ibm.cic.agent.offering_x.x.xxxx.xxxxxxxx_xxxx.zip file on your PC.
        2. Rename the agent.installer.os400.motif.ppc_x.x.xxx.xxxx_xxx.zip OR com.ibm.cic.agent.offering_x.x.xxxx.xxxxxxxx_xxxx.zip file to IM.zip.
        3. Create a directory called /IMRepository on your IBM i IFS using the following command:
        MKDIR DIR('/IMRepository')
        4. Copy the IM.zip file from your PC to the /IMRepository directory on the IBM i IFS using IBM Navigator for i, a mapped network drive, or FTP.
        5. Once the ZIP file has been copied, start a Qshell terminal session using the following command:
        STRQSH
        6. Change to the /IMRepository directory:
        cd /IMRepository
        7. Extract the contents of the ZIP file to the directory:
        jar xvf IM.zip
        8. Once the jar command completes and returns to a dollar sign ($), the IM repository is now ready for installation.
        Your IM repository path is now /IMRepository.

      Once the Installation Manager repository has been download and restored to the /IMRepository IFS path, enter the value "/IMRepository" for the package location when prompted for the Installation Manager Package Location.
