Scratch Installation of Version 8 HMC from Recovery DVD

Troubleshooting

Problem

This document describes how to scratch reload a Version 8 HMC from recovery media

Resolving The Problem

Scratch reloads fall into three main categories:
  1. A failure occurred during an HMC upgrade using recovery media, and Save Upgrade Data to USB flash drive was performed at the beginning of the upgrade.
  2. A hardware or software failure occurred during normal operation requiring reload of the HMC, and a current HMC backup (Backup Management Console Data) on USB flash drive is available.
  3. A clean installation is required (for example, an additional Ethernet card is installed in the HMC), or a recovery is required and no backup is available.

All 3 of these options require bootable Recovery Media. Recovery media can be obtained from IBM Fix Central at https://www-945.ibm.com/support/fixcentral or from the HMC software download site at https://public.dhe.ibm.com/software/server/hmc/recovery_images/. Download and burn the iso file as "image" (not data) to DVD‑R.

Note: The HMC Model 7063-CR1 supports use of a bootable USB, in addition to bootable DVD (local or remote BMC).

1. Failure occurred during upgrade, and Save Upgrade Data is available on USB flash drive.
Note: This method can be only be used for supported upgrade paths with target release of V8R8.6 or earlier.  This method is not supported for upgrades to V8R8.7 or V9.
  1. Insert the Recovery Media disk in the HMC's DVD drive. Use the recovery media for the release being upgraded to.
  2. Restart the HMC. The HMC reads the media in the DVD‑RAM drive and displays the Hardware Management Console Install Wizard window. Select Next.
Note: If the HMC fails to restart from optical, the boot manager may need be called (in other words, press F12 during the boot process) in order to get the HMC to boot from the optical drive.
  3. Select Install, and Next.
  4. Select Finish to start the Install process.
  5. When the install is complete, the following options are displayed:
    • Restore critical console data from media (Install Only)
    • Finish the installation without restoring data
  6. Select Finish the installation without restoring data. and select Next

You will encounter some or all of the following, not necessarily in the same order as shown:

  • During restart of the HMC, you may see a message regarding the keyboard layout. Select Option 2 - Do not change keyboard layout and do not run this program again on the next system reboot. If you do not make a selection within about 20 seconds, the reboot of the HMC will continue normally. This message will appear on each reboot until you make a selection.
  • During restart of the HMC, you may see a window with a message about the HMC locale. Select the option Exit now and don't prompt again for locale change. If you do not make a selection within about 20 seconds, the reboot of the HMC will continue normally. This message will appear on each reboot until you make a selection.
  • When prompted, sign on as hscroot, and use the default password abc123.
  • Accept license agreements (two times).
  • On the reboot following installation, the Guided setup wizards will launch, followed by the Call-home setup wizard. For both wizards, select No to bypass. Do not perform any manual configuration of the HMC.
  • Insert the USB flash drive with the Save Updgrade Data into the HMC
  • Restore upgrade data
    a) Open the restricted shell terminal (HMC Management - Open Restricted Shell Terminal),
    b) Locate the mount point
    lsmediadev
The output will show the USB flash drive and its mount point such as /media/sdb1.
    c) Mount the USB
Run the command "mount <mount point>" using the mount point returned from step b. For example:
    mount /media/sdb1
    d) Restore the upgrade data
    rstupgdata -r usb
  • When the rstupgdata command completes (returns to prompt), reboot the HMC using one of the following methods. The HMC upgrade data will be applied during the reboot.
    • In the restricted shell window, enter the following command: hmcshutdown -t now -r
    • From the HMC GUI, select HMC Management - Shutdown or Restart, select Restart, click OK
  • After the reboot, sign on with your previous hscroot login/password.

2. Failure occurred during normal operations, and a current HMC backup (Backup Management Console Data) is available on USB flash drive.

Note: Best practice is to restore the backup over the same Release, service pack and iFix level the backup was taken from. Minimum fix levels are required before restore (or backup) at some releases/fix levels. Always review the release specific readme/notes available in IBM fix central for detailed information.
  1. Insert the Recovery Media disk in the HMC's DVD drive.
  2. Reboot the HMC.
  6. Select Restore critical console data. and select Next
  7. Insert the USB flash drive containing the Backup Management Console Data, and select Next.
  8. The HMC will reboot, and the backup data is automatically restored.

3. Clean Install.

If the HMC is accessible, you may want to record the current settings before performing a clean install. See IBM Support document N1011269 "Items to Document Prior to Performing Scratch Installation of the HMC" at http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=nas8N1011269.

  1. Insert the Recovery Media disk in the HMC's DVD drive.
  2. Reboot the HMC.
Actions to Take Following a Scratch Installation

After a clean installation, you will encounter some or all of the following, not necessarily in the same order as shown:

  • During reboot of the HMC, you may see a message regarding the keyboard layout. Select Option 2 - Do not change keyboard layout and do not run this program again on the next system reboot. If you do not make a selection within about 20 seconds, the reboot of the HMC will continue normally. This message will appear on each reboot until you make a selection.
  • During reboot of the HMC, you may see a window with a message about the HMC locale.
  • On the reboot following installation, the Guided Setup Wizard will launch. Depending on the release, the Call-Home Setup Wizard may launch. You may either use the Setup Wizard, or you may configure the HMC manually.
