How to DLPAR Virtual Fibre Channel Adapters Using the HMC Enhanced GUI

Troubleshooting

Problem

This document describes how to perform dynamic logical partitioning (DLPAR) operations on client partitions using the new HMC enhanced GUI.

Resolving The Problem

The HMC enhanced UI simplifies dynamic logical partitioning (DLPAR) operations for the users. Unlike the "classic" UI, users do not work directly with the virtual adapters (in VIOSes or the client).  Instead the users configures the client partition with the backing device they wish the client to use.  The HMC handles the creation of the partition client adapters, the creation of the matching server adapters in the VIOSes as well as the mapping of the virtual adapter to physical adapter.

Notes:

1. To persist dynamic changes in the current profile either ensure the partition properties has Save configuration changes to profile set to Enabled prior to the dlpar or use the Configuration > Save Current Configuration task after the DLPAR.
2. VIOS partitions do not have a Manage task. This is because the VIOS adapters are handled (added/deleted/modified) automatically when the client partitions are modified.

To perform dynamic logical partitioning (DLPAR) operatons on client partitions using the new HMC enhanced GUI, you should do the following:

1. Select the AIX/Linux/IBM i client partition to modify and View Partition Properties.

2. Click Virtual I/O > Virtual Storage:

3. Select the Virtual Fiber Channel tab, then click Add Virtual Fiber Channel Device:

4. Select the desired VIOS backing device(s) to use and click OK:

Note:  The Edit Connections button can be used to configure advanced settings such as WWPN overrides and server adapter number override.

5. Verify results.
After the task completes, the HMC will display the new adapter information including the virtual WWPN that will need to be zoned to the SAN switch and storage:

6. (optional)  View the adapter layer configuration.

Click on the Adapter View button then View Fibre Channel Adapters tab to view the virtual adapter details which includes the client adapter number, the server adapter number, the vhost in VIOS, as well as the backing adapter:
