Recommended PJL Port Number Values for *LAN 3812 PJL Device Descriptions

Troubleshooting

Problem

This document contains a list of recommended PCL/PJL Port Number values for *LAN TCP/IP printer device descriptions depending on the type of network interface or print server being used with your printer.

Resolving The Problem

Note: This document was previously titled Recommended PCL/PJL Port Number Values for *LAN TCP/IP ASCII Printer Support.

This document contains a list of recommended PCL/PJL Port Number values for *LAN TCP/IP printer device descriptions, depending on the type of network interface or print server being used with your printer.

The Port number (PORT) parameter specifies which TCP/IP port to use when printing IBM OS/400 or IBM i5/OS spooled files from the IBM Power Systems through a *LAN 3812 PJL device description to a printer on a Local Area Network (LAN) or Wide Area Network (WAN). Therefore, the specified TCP/IP port must be open on any firewalls, routers, or SOCK servers used between the Power Systems and the printer. If the specified TCP/IP port is closed, the printer writer for the *LAN 3812 PJL device description will be unable to open a connection with the printer and will, therefore, not be able to print to that printer.

This document was last updated 4 February 2014.

Recommended PJL Port Number values

This video describes how to use this document to determine the recommended PJL port number for your printer.

Hardware Requirements for *LAN 3812 PJL Device Descriptions

  • ] There is no guarantee that printers that support Remote Output Queues will also support *LAN 3812 PJL device descriptions. For a *LAN PJL device description to work, the following hardware requirements must be met:

1 The printer must support bidirectional Printer Job Language (PJL).
2 The print server must pass the Printer Job Language (PJL) data to the printer untouched and must allow bidirectional communications with the printer.
3 If an external print server is used, the printer must be connected using a bidirectional or IEEE 1284 parallel cable. A standard parallel cable is not sufficient for bidirectional communications with the printer.
If these requirements are not met, most likely a Remote Output Queue can be used to print directly from OS/400 or i5/OS to the printer. [

  • - List of Recommended Port Number Values for *LAN 3812 PJL Device Descriptions

    ] Notes:

    1. Both the printer and the network interface or print server for the printer must support bidirectional Printer Job Language (PJL) support for a *LAN TCP/IP printer device description to work. If this requirement is not met, you should still be able to print directly from OS/400 or i5/OS to the printer using a Remote Output Queue.
    2. This list is not intended to be all-inclusive. If using a network interface or system that does not appear in this list, contact your OEM vendor to find out what value to use when sending spooled files using PJL (sometimes referred to as AppSocket or Reverse Telnet).
    3. This list used to include a column for System Driver Program. However, the choices of *IBMPJLDRV and *HPPJLDRV can be used interchangeably; they both select the same OS/400 or i5/OS PJL driver code, so this column has been removed.

  • - Configuring the Printer and Print Server Hardware

] The success of *LAN 3812 PJL device descriptions is very dependent on the configuration settings in OS/400 or i5/OS and on the printer and print server hardware. The following document contains information about configuring the time-out values on the printer and print server hardware as well as common error messages that you may receive when printing through a *LAN 3812 PJL device description: N1019652: Configuration Settings and Error Messages for *LAN 3812 PJL Device Descriptions [

  • - Information Concerning IBM NPS and Axis Print Servers

] *LAN 3812 PJL device descriptions might work with IBM NPS and Axis print servers, provided the print server is at firmware version 6.00 or higher. The firmware upgrade can be downloaded from the following Web site: www.axis.com/techsup/firmware.php Verify that the Axis print server is configured with HP JetAdmin Support or Reverse Telnet Options Enabled set to YES (depending on the Axis firmware version) and with both the PROS TCP Port Number and PR1 TCP Port Number set to 9100. These values can be set using the internal host page of the IBM NPS or Axis print server. To access the internal host page of the print server, type the host name of the print server or the TCP/IP address as a URL in a standard Web browser, for example "http://9.5.208.54/". After the print server is setup, configure the *LAN 3812 PJL device description with the Port number (PORT) parameter set to 9100. Note: For Axis multi-port print servers, it is recommended that you set RTEL_PR1 = 9100 for parallel port 1 and RTEL_PR2 = 9101 for parallel port 2, though any values can be used. [

  • - Information Concerning Intel Netport Print Servers

] Intel has recently added support for bidirectional PJL on Port 9100. The NetportExpress 10/100 Print Server firmware must be upgraded to version 5.30 or higher for *LAN 3812 PJL device descriptions to work. The firmware upgrade can be downloaded from the following Web site: www.intel.com/support/netport/sb/cs-015188.htm Intel also has a Web page with more information on configuring a *LAN 3812 PJL device description when the printer is connected using one of their Netport print servers. The Web site follows: www.intel.com/support/netport/10100/sb/cs-011584.htm Note: There is no support for PJL on the Intel NetportExpress PRO and PRO/100 family of print servers nor the Intel NetportExpress XL and EL family of print servers. [

  • - Information Concerning Osicom Print Servers and Ricoh, Savin, Lanier, Gestetner, Nashuatec, Rex-Rotary and Infotec Printers

] Osicom, Ricoh, and Savin print servers support bidirectional PJL. However, the Base Port Number might need to be set to 9099 on the network interface card (NIC) or print server to use port 9100 in the *LAN 3812 PJL device description, or ports 9100, 9101 and 9102 in an external Osicom NetPrint print servers (depending on which parallel port is being used). The Base Port Number can be changed using an Internet browser (such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator) using the Web interface for the print server. For example, link to "http://38.242.136.182/" where 38.242.136.182 is the TCP/IP address for the print server. The configuration password defaults to 'sysadm' (in lower case) for at least some of these printers. If that value does not work, contact your printer manufacturer or third-party vendor to find out which configuration password to use for your particular printer model or for assistance with resetting that password. Note: Newer Ricoh, Savin, Lanier, Gestetner, Nashuatec, Rex-Rotary and Infotec printers do not allow the Base Port Number to be changed, but generally it should still work using port 9100. [

  • - Information Concerning Xerox Document Centre 4xx Printers

] *LAN 3812 PJL device descriptions will work with Xerox Document Centre 4xx printers, provided port 9100 is enabled in the printer hardware. To enable port 9100 on the Xerox Document Centre 4xx printer hardware, type the TCP/IP address of the printer in a Web browser. Select the device Index link, then select the Port 9100 link. Select the Enable Port 9100 box and choose Apply. Port 9100 will then be enabled after powering the printer off and back on. Note that the printer will ask for a userID and password. The default user ID is admin (in lowercase) and the default password is 22222. Notes:

    1. If the Port 9100 link is not listed, select the TCP/IP link and then expand the service folder and then the protocol folder. Port9100 will be listed under protocols.
    2. This information was acquired from Xerox. If you are working with a Xerox printer that is not listed above, or if these settings do not work correctly, contact Xerox Customer Technical Support at 1-800-821-2797 (United States only).
