Troubleshooting
Problem
This document provides information on configuring a *LAN 3812 LEXLINK device description for a LAN-attached Lexmark printer with either an internal or an external Lexmark MarkNet print server.
Resolving The Problem
Note: This document was previously entitled Configuring Internal and External *LEXLINK Device Descriptions. This document provides information on configuring a *LAN 3812 LEXLINK device description for a LAN-attached Lexmark printer with either an internal or an external Lexmark MarkNet print server.
Caution: The Lexlink protocol is not TCP/IP-compliant but rather is very similar to SNA. Therefore, Lexlink requires a network that will pass this non-TCP/IP protocol between the IBM System i products and the printer. Furthermore, newer Ethernet cards for the System i (including the Gigabit or 1Gb Ethernet adapter) are setup to pass TCP/IP-only data to the network, so *LAN 3812 LEXLINK device descriptions will not work when those network adapters are used. If any of the network adapters, routers, switches or firewalls will not accept the Lexlink protocol, or if the *LAN 3812 LEXLINK device description does not work, then it is recommended that the printer be configured another way, such as using a *LAN 3812 PJL device description, a *LAN 3812 SNMP device description, a *LAN 3812 IPP device description, a Remote Output Queue (RMTOUTQ) or a *LAN 3812 device description that uses the LPR Print Driver Exit Program (TSPLPRD). For more instructions on the other ways to print to network attached printers, refer to the following Rochester Support Center knowledgebase documents: N1010134: Configuring a *LAN 3812 PJL Device Description N1019572: Configuring a *LAN 3812 SNMP Device Description N1019375: Configuring a *LAN 3812 IPP Device Description N1010090: Configuring a Remote Output Queue (RMTOUTQ) N1019586: Configuring a *LAN 3812 Device Description that Uses the LPR Print Driver (TSPLPRD) Exit Program |

o | The printer must be connected to the network using a network interface card (NIC) or external print server that supports the LEXLINK protocol, such as an IBM 4033 LAN adapter device or a Lexmark MarkNet XLe print server. |
o | The NIC or external print server must be attached to a Token Ring network, an Ethernet IEEE 802.3 network, or an Ethernet network with all standards specified. |
o | Any routers, hubs, or switches between the printer and the IBM i server must be set up to pass on the LEXLINK frames to the Lexmark printer or Lexmark MarkNet XLe print server. |
Configuring a *LAN 3812 LEXLINK Printer Device Description
To configure a *LAN 3812 *LEXLINK printer device description for a printer that has an internal or external Lexmark MarkNet print server, do the following:
1. | On the operating system command line, type the following: CRTDEVPRT Press F4 to prompt. |
2. | The screens expand as you fill in the requested fields and press the Enter key or press F10. The completed printer device description is similar to the following: |
