Recommended SNMP Port Number Values for *LAN 3812 SNMP Device Descriptions

Troubleshooting

Problem

This document contains a list of recommended SNMP Port Number Values for *LAN 3812 SNMP printer device descriptions, depending on the type of network interface or print server being used with your printer.

Resolving The Problem

This document contains a list of recommended SNMP Port Number Values for *LAN 3812 SNMP printer device descriptions, depending on the type of network interface or print server being used with your printer.

The Port number (PORT) parameter specifies which TCP/IP port to use when printing operating system spooled files from the IBM Power Systems through a *LAN 3812 SNMP device description to a printer on a Local Area Network (LAN) or Wide Area Network (WAN). Therefore, the specified TCP/IP port must be open on any firewalls, routers, or SOCK servers used between the Power Systems and the printer. If the specified TCP/IP port is closed, the printer writer for the *LAN 3812 SNMP device description will be unable to open a connection with the printer and will therefore not be able to print to that printer.

Recommended SNMP Port Number values

This video describes how to use this document to determine the recommended SNMP port number for your printer.

  • - Hardware Requirements for *LAN 3812 SNMP Device Descriptions

There is no guarantee that printers that support *LAN 3812 PJL device descriptions will also support SNMP (or vice-versa). For a *LAN SNMP device description to work, the following hardware requirements must be met:

1 The printer connected via this print driver must support the industry standard Host Resource Management Information Base (RFC 1514). It is highly recommended (but not required) that the printer also support the Printer Management Information Base (RFC 1759).
2 If the printer is connected to a network adapter, the adapter must be compatible with the printer and it must also support the Host Resource Management Information Base (RFC 1759).

Note: Consult the manufacturer of the adapter to determine if it supports the printer because some network adapters do not support all printers.
3 If the printer is connected to an external network adapter that has more than one port, the printer should be connected to the first parallel port and there should be no other SNMP capable devices attached to the adapter.
4 The printer and any adapter connected via this print driver must have set, at a minimum, a community name of "public". The community name of "public" is normally a factory default setting. Community names are a means of access control for SNMP devices. Read-only access to the "public" community is sufficient.

Note: As of 6.1 PTF SI54993, 7.1 PTF SI50661, and the base code for 7.2 i5/OS, the SNMP system driver program will now attempt to connect with the printer using each community that is listed in the system SNMP configuration file, until it finds a community that is supported by the printer. If unable to access the printer community using any of these names, the SNMP system driver program will attempt one last time using the "public" community before failing with message CPD401A "Could not establish SNMP communications with device &1".

To update the community names in the configuration file, run the following Configure TCP/IP Applications (CFGTCPAPP) command:

    CFGTCPAPP APP(*SNMP)

and take Option 2 (Work with communities for SNMP), then take Option 1 (Add) to add the community name used for your SNMP printer. The change will take effect the next time the writer for your *LAN 3812 SNMP printer device description is started.

Note: The IBM i SNMP code will accept any non-whitespace character that can be translated from the job CCSID to CCSID 500 and to ASCII CCSID 437 for the community name. Whether the receiving SNMP agent, such as the printer, supports the same set of allowable characters or the same ASCII CCSID will depend on the printer's implementation of SNMP. Meaning, some printers may accept special characters such as an exclamation mark ( ! ), ampersand ( & ), at sign ( @ ), but others may not. Please contact the printer manufacturer or visit their website to find out what restrictions might apply for the SNMP community name on their hardware.

Note: Unlike *LAN 3812 PJL device descriptions, there is no requirement to use an IEEE 1284, bidirectional printer cable or to have the print server in BITRONICS, BI-DIRECTIONAL or ECP/MLC mode to print using a *LAN 3812 SNMP device description.

For a list of known printers that support SNMP, refer to the following Rochester Support Center knowledgebase document:

  • - List of Recommended Port Number Values for *LAN 3812 SNMP Device Descriptions

    Notes:

    1. The port number value is dependent on the print server, sometimes called a LAN adapter or Network Interface (NIC) card, not the printer hardware. If the printer has an internal print server, you might need to contact the manufacturer of your printer or your printer vendor to find out the model of print server used.

  • - Configuring the Printer and Print Server Hardware

The success of *LAN 3812 SNMP device descriptions is dependent on the configuration settings on OS/400 or i5/OS as well as on the printer and print server hardware. For more information about configuring the time-out values on the printer and print server hardware and common error messages that you can receive when printing through a *LAN 3812 SNMP device description, refer to the following document:

Configuration Settings and Error Messages for *LAN 3812 SNMP Device Descriptions

    • - Information Concerning IBM NPS and Axis Print Servers

*LAN 3812 SNMP device descriptions will work with IBM NPS and Axis print servers, provided the print server is at firmware version 6.00 or higher. The firmware upgrade can be downloaded from the following Web site:

      www.axis.com/techsup/firmware.php

Verify that the Axis print server is configured with HP JetAdmin Support or Reverse Telnet Options Enabled set to YES (depending on the Axis firmware version) and with both the PROS TCP Port Number and PR1 TCP Port Number set to 9100. These values can be set using the internal host page of the IBM NPS or Axis print server. To access the internal home page of the print server, type the host name or TCP/IP address of the print server as a URL in a standard Web browser, for example, http://9.5.208.54/. After the print server is setup, configure the *LAN 3812 SNMP device description with the Port number (PORT) parameter set to 9900.

      Notes:

o For Axis multi-port print servers, it is recommended that you set RTEL_PR1 = 9100 for parallel port 1 and RTEL_PR2 = 9101 for parallel port 2, though any values can be used.
o The *LAN 3812 SNMP device description should be configured with the Port number (PORT) parameter set to 9900, even though the PROS TCP Port Number and PR1 TCP Port Number settings in the Axis print server hardware are set to 9100.
o For the Axis 5400 server, customer may need to turn off the SNMP V1, SNMP V2C and SNMP V3 in order to change the IP address. After the IP address has been updated, they will need to turn the SNMP options back on for an *LAN 3812 SNMP DEVD to work.
o For Printek printers attached via an Axis 5400 server, you may need to set the PROS TCP Port Number to 9100, the PR1 TCP Port Number to 9100, the PR2 TCP Port Number to 9101, and the PR3 TCP Port Number to 9102.
    • - Information Concerning Epson Print Servers

*LAN 3812 SNMP device descriptions will work with Epson Multiprotocol 10/100 Ethernet, Type B print servers provided the print server is at firmware version 2.31 or higher. The firmware upgrade can be downloaded from the following Web site:

      support.epson.com/filelibrary.html

    • - Information Concerning Xerox Document Centre 4xx Printers

*LAN 3812 SNMP device descriptions will work with Xerox Document Centre 4xx printers, provided port 9100 is enabled and an SNMP tray is created in the printer hardware.

To enable port 9100 on the Xerox Document Centre 4xx printer hardware, type the TCP/IP address of the printer in a Web browser. Select the device Index link, then select the Port 9100 link. Select the Enable Port 9100 box and choose Apply. Port 9100 will then be enabled after powering the printer off and back on. Note that the printer will ask for a userID and password. The default user ID is admin (in lowercase) and the default password is 22222.

Note: If the Port 9100 link is not listed, select the TCP/IP link and then expand the service folder and then the protocol folder. Port 9100 will be listed under protocols.

To create an SNMP tray on the Xerox Document Centre 4xx printer hardware, type the TCP/IP address of the printer in a Web browser. Select the Index link, then select the SNMP link and the Add IP Address link. Type the TCP/IP address and leave all other parameters default and select Apply new settings. The printer will again ask for a userID and password. After you are done you should see the newly created trap listed.

Note: This information was acquired from Xerox. If you are working with a Xerox printer that is not listed above, or if these settings do not work correctly, please contact Xerox Customer Technical Support at 1-800-821-2797 (United States only).
