Hardware Requirements for *LAN 3812 IPP Device Descriptions
There is no guarantee that printers that support Remote Output Queues will also support IPP (or vice versa). For a *LAN IPP device description to work, the following hardware requirements must be met:1. The internal network interface card (NIC) or external print server must support the Internet Print Protocol (IPP). 2. The internal network interface card (NIC) or external print server must support IPP Chunking because the printer writer will attempt to make a connection before Host Print Transform (HPT) has completely converted the spooled file to an ASCII printer data stream. 3. The internal network interface card (NIC) or external print server must be at a firmware or microcode level that supports IPP printing. 4. If the printer is connected to an external network adapter, it must be connected using an IEEE 1284, bidirectional printer cable, and the print server must be in BITRONICS, BI-DIRECTIONAL, or ECP/MLC mode.
Note: If it is unclear if the network interface card (NIC) or print server supports IPP, contact the manufacturer.

List of Recommended Remote Location (RMTLOCNAME) Values for *LAN 3812 IPP Device Descriptions
Notes:1 The network interface card (NIC) or print server must support Internet Print Protocol (IPP) for a *LAN 3812 IPP device description to work, though no special support is required in the printer itself. If the requirements for IPP support are not met, you should still be able to print directly from IBM OS/400 or IBM i5/OS to the printer using a Remote Output Queue, *LAN 3812 PJL device description, or *LAN 3812 SNMP device description. 2 This list is not intended to be all-inclusive. If using a network interface or system that does not appear in this list, contact your OEM vendor to find out if the printer or print server supports Internet Print Protocol (IPP) and what URL to specify to access the printer using IPP. Configuring the Printer and Print Server Hardware
The success of *LAN 3812 IPP device descriptions is very dependent on the configuration settings in OS/400 or i5/OS and on the print server hardware. The following document contains information about configuring the time-out values on the printer and print server hardware and common error messages that you may receive when printing through a *LAN 3812 IPP device description:

Information Concerning Printers from InfoPrint Solutions or IBM Printing Solutions
As stated in the Hardware Requirements for *LAN 3812 IPP Device Descriptions section above, the internal network interface card (NIC) or external print server must support IPP Chunking because the printer writer will attempt to make a connection before Host Print Transform (HPT) has completely converted the spooled file to an ASCII printer data stream. Not all versions of IBM Infoprint printer microcode support IPP Chunking. The same may be true for printers from InfoPrint Solutions Company.
InfoPrint Solutions Company was formed as a joint venture between IBM and Ricoh on June 1 2007, taking over the former IBM Printing Systems business.
If a *LAN 3812 IPP device description does not work to a particular InfoPrint Solutions or IBM Infoprint printer, print a configuration page from the printer hardware, then get assistance from the InfoPrint Solutions Company. In the US, InfoPrint Solutions Customer Service & Support may be contacted at 1-877-318-8968. For a list of worldwide contacts, refer to the InfoPrint Solutions Company: Contact Us web page at:
http://www.infoprintsolutionscompany.com/internet/wwsites.nsf/vwwebpublished/htb_home_us
Your InfoPrint Solutions Company hardware support representative should be able to determine whether there is an updated version of your printer microcode that supports IPP Chunking.

Information Concerning Axis Print Servers
According to Axis Communications, IPP support is available with several Axis print servers. Some earlier versions of Axis print servers can also be upgraded to provide IPP by downloading the 6.10 firmware version. To verify that a specific Axis print server provides support for Internet Print Protocol (IPP) printing, refer to the following Axis Web site:
www.axis.com/products/print_servers/guide_print.htm
-
Information Concerning HP JetDirect Print Servers
Generally speaking, a *LAN 3812 IPP device description will work with any printer that has an internal HP JetDirect print server or any printer attached to an external HP JetDirect print server, provided the HP JetDirect is at a specific firmware revision level. To determine the firmware revision level for an HP JetDirect print server or to verify that the firmware level is sufficient for support for Internet Print Protocol (IPP) printing, refer to the following HP Web site:
www.hp.com/cposupport/networking/support_doc/bpj05549.html
