Resolving the problem
The Update Program Temporary Fix Information (UPDPTFINF) command updates PTF information for all PTF save files in library QGPL. Generally, this command is run only during (or after) a complete system recovery and only after library QGPL has been restored. This is a new command made available starting with V5R4M0 release.
However, there are other instances where this command can be used.
When we order PTFs, the system updates QAPZxxx files in QUSRSYS, registers them, and keeps track of the status of those PTFs. However, if PTF save files were ordered on another system (not directly on this system) and then transferred to a system (for example, using TCP or FTP), those PTF save files do not get registered in the QAPZxxx files. Running the UPDPTFINF command will register all PTF save files found in library QGPL.
Another instance would be when a customer uses Fix Central to download the cumulative PTF package directly to the system and does not select the option to customize the order, there will be PTFs for other releases that will be downloaded When the customer tries to install the cumulative package but will leave the save files for the PTFs for other releases untouched, they will remain on the system and not get logged into *SERVICE. The UPDPTFINF command will put those PTFs into *SERVICE and can be deleted by running the DLTPTF command.
This command is shipped with public *EXCLUDE authority and the QPGMR, QSYSOPR, QSRV, and QSRVBAS user profiles have private authorities to use the command.
Previous to V5R4, a CLP can be written to call an API to perform this update function. Refer to the following Rochester Support Center knowledgebase document:
New, Example CL Program using API QPZLOGFX - Log PTF Information:
An alternate method that is available prior to V5R4 is to delete the QAPZxxx logical and physical files in QUSRSYS library and then perform an IPL to get those PTF save files registered and their correct status reflected.
