Changing FTP Server Login Banner Message 220

Troubleshooting

Problem

The process for changing the FTP Banner Message is described in this document.

Resolving The Problem

Users have recently expressed the desire to change the default login banner for the FTP server. By default, when a connection is made to the server, a 220 message is returned to the client. This 220 message contains the keyword QTCP that may identify the host as an IBM iSeries system and also contains the fully-qualified hostname.

ftp 10.10.10.1
Connected to 10.10.10.1.
220-QTCP at myserver.mycompany.com.
220 Connection will close if idle more than 5 minutes.

For security purposes, it may be advantageous to hide these details from someone not logged in to the machine but who is merely connecting to the FTP service.

To change the text of this 220 message, do the following:

1On the IBM OS/400 command line, type the following:

WRKMSGF MSGF(QTCP/QTCPMSGF)

Press the Enter key.
2Select Option 12, Work with message descriptions, and press the Enter key.
3Position to message ID TCP120D.
4Select Option 12, change this message. Edit the first-level message text. The default is:

'220- &1 at &2.'

Where variable &1 is the subsystem QTCP and &2 is the hostname.

Type your text in place of this, and save it. The next time someone FTPs, the first-level message text will read:

First-level message text . . . . '220- I replaced this message.'

ftp 10.10.10.1
Connected to 10.10.10.1.
220-I replaced this message.
220 Connection will close if idle more than 5 minutes
