Resolving The Problem

This document provides instructions on gathering the IBM i system and PC traces required for resolving Management Central issues. Note: Unless otherwise indicated by a support representative, you should collect the traces on the Central system, Endpoint system with the problem, and the PC running IBM i Access for Windows - System i Navigator (previously known as IBM i Access for Windows - iSeries Navigator):

Step 1:From the Central System and the Endpoint system, obtain the QYPSJSVR job number by running the following command:
WRKJOB QYPSJSVR.
Step 2:Run the following command on the command line in order to start the SERVER (Central and Endpoint systems) side traces:
CALL QSYS/QYPSCONFIG PARM('QYPSJ_TRACE' '2')
Step 3:Start the graphic user interface (GUI) traces on the PC:

For Windows (NT, 2000, XP and 7):

a. Verify IBM i Access for Windows - System i Navigator is ended.
b. Right-click the My Computer icon and select Properties from the pop-up menu.
c. Select the Advanced Tab, followed by the Environment Variables option (or the Environment tab).
d. Select New from the System variables section located in the Environment Variables window.
e. Type the following:
Variable name: QYPS_TRACE
Variable value: 0
f. Select the Start Diagnostic Tools located in the Windows Start Menu > Programs > IBM iSeries Access for Windows > Service folder.
g. Start System i Navigator.
h. Select File > Java Trace > Options from System i Navigator.
i. Verify Error, Information, Warning and Thread are selected from the Java Trace Options screen. If they are not selected, select them.
j. Select File > Java Trace > Start from System i Navigator.
k. Select Clear All Diagnostics by right-clicking the System i Access for Windows Diagnostics icon located in the Windows task bar.
l. Select Start All Diagnostics by right-clicking the System i Access for Windows Diagnostics icon located in the Windows task bar.
Step 4:Re-create the issue.
Step 5:End the IBM i server side traces with the following command:
CALL QSYS/QYPSCONFIG PARM('QYPSJ_TRACE' '-1')

Note: The above command must be run on both the Central system and Endpoint system.
Step 6:Collect the data from the IBM i servers and PC:

From the IBM i servers:

a. QYPSJSVR joblog from both the Central system and Endpoint system.

Run the following command to print the active QYPSJSVR joblogs:
DSPJOBLOG JOB(xxxxxx/QYPSJSVR/QYPSJSVR) OUTPUT(*PRINT)
Note: xxxxxx is the number of the active QYPSJSVR job gathered from Step 1.

b. Management Central trace files may be viewed using the following command:
WRKLNK '/qibm/UserData/OS400/MGTC/service/*'

Note: The trace files will be named and contain the same job number from Step 1:
Mc.xxxxxx.QYPSJSVR.QYPSJSVR.java.service.log
Mc.xxxxxx.QYPSJSVR.QYPSJSVR.Management Central.java.service.log

c. To export the files from Step 6a and 6b above, log into System i Navigator using the same user ID as used on the IBM i command line.

i) Export the QYPSJSVR joblog from both the Central system and Endpoint system:
o Select Printer Output by expanding My Connections > (system name) > Basic Operations.
o Locate the QPJOBLOG files and drag and drop them onto the PC desktop to move them from IBM i server. (Verify the created time/date appear correct.)

ii) Export the Management Central trace files from both the central system and endpoint system:
o Select the service directory by expanding My Connections > (system name) > File Systems > Integrated File System > o Root > QIBM > UserData > OS400 > MGTC
o Locate the trace files and drag and drop them onto the PC desktop to move them from the IBM i server. Note: These are the files viewed in Step 6b.

From the PC:
d. Collect the C++ GUI Trace file:
o Copy and paste the QAYPSLOG.txt file to your desktop. This file is located in the PC root directory (normally the C:\ drive).

e. Collect the Java GUI Trace files:
o Copy and paste the MgmtCtrl.Java.Service.log and OpNav.Java.Service.log files to your desktop. These files are located in different locations depending on which version of Windows is used.

For Microsoft Windows 7 search: C:\Users\
For Microsoft Windows 2000/XP search: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\IBM\Client Access\Service
For Microsoft Windows ME, Windows 98, and Windows 95 search: C:\My Documents\IBM\Client Access\Service
For Microsoft Windows NT search: C:\Winnt\Profiles\Administrator\Personal\IBM\Client Access\Service
Note: If you are having difficulty finding these files, search your PC using the following substring *.Java.Service.log
Step 7:End the PC traces:

a. Remove the Environment Variable.
i) Right-click the My Computer icon and select Properties from the pop-up menu.
ii) Select the Advanced Tab, followed by the Environment Variables option (or the Environment tab).
