Resolving The Problem

This document shows how to cleanly uninstall and purge the IBM® AFP printer driver and related files from selected versions Microsoft Windows.  This information does not apply to the AFP Print Driver provided by Ricoh.

NOTE:  The IBM i Global Support Center does not support in removal of the print driver from Windows.  The following instructions are provided AS-IS.  Refer to Windows HELP or contact Microsoft for assistance, if needed.
The IBM AFP driver can be uninstalled by simply clicking on the driver in the Printers and Faxes folder in Microsoft Windows and deleting it. However, this does not remove all the AFP driver files from the PC and more steps are needed to completely purge it from the system.

Reasons for Driver Purge and Re-Install

There are several reasons for AFP Driver Purge and Re-Install. These reasons include the corruption of the AFP Driver (the source of the corruption might be unknown) and circumstances in which a user might want to install an old version of the driver over a new one. In any case, there are some simple steps to follow to cleanly remove all trace of the AFP driver from a Windows system.

Completely Removing the AFP Printer Driver from Windows 7

The above instructions should remove the AFP printer driver from Windows XP, but they will not remove the driver from Windows 7.

With Windows 7, you must remove the printer driver and also remove the driver package from the driver store.

To remove a printer driver and driver package from Windows 7, try using the Print Management snap-in that is available through Microsoft Management Console (MMC). If that does not remove the driver, then try the printui tool instead.

Microsoft Technet provides infomation on using Print Management and the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) in the article titled Print Management Step-by-Step Guide:

Otherwise, try the following third-party tutorial titled Remove Windows Vista/7 Printer Driver:

If Print Management and the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) do not completely remove the printer driver and driver package, try the following third-party tutorial that discusses using the printui tool titled How to completely remove printer from Windows 7:

Cleanly Purging the AFP Printer Driver from Windows XP

Follow the steps below to cleanly install and purge the AFP Driver from a Windows PC:
Caution: This process might require making changes to the Windows Registry. If you are not familiar with this process, contact a service representative.
1. Delete all AFP Drivers from the Printers and Faxes folder. This will delete them from the Printers and Faxes folder, but does not remove the driver files themselves. Read on!
2. Restart the PC. In the Printers and Faxes folder, click on File > Server Properties. Then click on the Drivers tab to display the installed printer drivers. Click on the AFP drivers listed here and delete them.
3. Run REGEDIT and search for IBM AFP and delete all entries that reference IBM AFP drivers. (You may not find any.) Use your own judgement as far as deletion goes because deleting the wrong entry without having a saved copy of your Registry can seriously damage your computer.
4. Browse to the SYSTEM32\SPOOL\DRIVERS\W32X86\3\ portion of the Windows directory and delete all files beginning with CWB.

Note: The name of the W32X... folder can differ based on your Windows version.
5. Restart the PC.

Additional Keywords: Windows 7, printer driver, driver package, driver store, Print Managment, Microsoft Management Console (MMC), printui.
