Problem
HMC supports USB-Flash drives for write operations that use removable media. Optical media is no longer supported for any write operations. For older HMC versions that supported writing to removable optical media, the only optical media type supported for writing was DVD-RAM.
Resolving The Problem
Note: Current HMC releases support only USB-Flash drives for write operations that use removable media. For all HMC releases currently under fix support, optical media is no longer supported for any write operations.
For older HMC versions that supported writing to removable optical media, the only optical media type supported for writing was DVD-RAM.
- Effective February 15, 2011, IBM announced it no longer ships a blank DVD-RAM disk with new HMC orders for model 7042-CR6, 7042-C08, and later. Network or USB drives are now the preferred methods for HMC backup/recovery. Customers who want to use USB memory for HMC backup/recovery should order:

In HMC V7R7.8 release notes (readme), IBM announced "DVD-RAM is no longer supported for backup and restore of console data."
In HMC V8R8.1 release notes (readme), IBM announced that V8R8.1 is the last release to support DVD-RAM media for any tasks including:
o manage problem data
o dump management
o save upgrade data
o pedbg
o format media
For releases prior to V7R8, the only optical media supported for writing on the HMC is DVD-RAM. The DVD-RAM media is used for tasks such as Critical Console Data backup and saving service information for problem determination.
DVD-RAM disks are no longer manufactured or marketed by IBM. You can purchase DVD-RAM disks from a number of vendors in the US and worldwide. While the part numbers below are not orderable part numbers, they can be provided to your media vendor to assist in determining specifications for what the compatible media should be.

Prior to the model CR6 and C08, every HMC shipped with a Back Up DVD (part number 09P5407 EC:H11637) along with recovery media. It was listed on the packing slip by part number with a description of Software, Backup DVD. The DVD is normally included in the same plastic bag as the warranty information, License Agreement, and other software such as the Recovery DVDs. The "Back Up DVD" is a DVD-RAM that can be used to perform Back Up Console Data and/or Save Upgrade Data operations on the HMC. The following files illustrate the media and Back Up DVD that are provided as part of the HMC shipgroup.
