Logical Partitioning on Model 515

Troubleshooting

Problem

This documents provides information regarding Feature 7966. This feature must be ordered to enable LPAR on Model 515.

Resolving The Problem

Logical Partitioning on Model 515

In most configurations, it is anticipated that logical partitioning is not desired. However, logical partitioning is available. Logical partitioning (LPAR) on the Model 515 requires Feature 7966 - Advanced Power Virtualization (APV).

Like other IBM POWER5-based systems, an HMC is required for an IBM AIX 5L partition or for a Linux partition with a dedicated I/O. It is optional for up to three Linux partitions using all IBM i5/OS virtual I/O.

The first four disk drives are always driven by the embedded disk controller of the 515 CEC. The second set in the Model 515 is always driven by a disk controller in a PCI slot. The second set can be owned by the i5/OS partition or another partition. There is a maximum of two i5/OS partitions (one per set of four disk slots).

An i5/OS partition can support AIX/Linux partitions for virtual I/O.

APV support includes the capability to define a Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) partition that can own resources such as network adapters, disk adapters, and disk drives that are shared with Linux or AIX 5L client partitions.

#7966 Advanced Power Virtualization (APV)

Some details follow regarding the Advanced Power Virtualization feature.

oThis feature enables partitioning, which is the ability to have more than one logical partition for i5/OS V5R4, AIX, and Linux. This is unique to the model 515 and separate and distinct from #7940 Advanced Power Virtualization on other IBM System i5 models 520, 525, 550, 570, and 595.
oThis feature enables IBM Micro-Partitioning, which is the granularity to assign less than one full processor capacity to a partition.
oThis feature is an optional, chargeable per-processor feature:

o If it is a 1-way 515, order zero #7966 features or one #7966 feature.
o If it is a 2-way 515, order zero #7966 features or two #7966 features (two are required).
o There is a price per #7966 feature ordered.
oThis feature ships the software enablement key for the system, and it ships Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) and Partition Load Manager (PLM). The Virtual I/O Server is a special-purpose partition that provides virtual I/O resources to AIX 5L and Linux client partitions. The Virtual I/O Server partition owns the resources that are shared with clients.

Note: The System i 9406 or 9405 include partitioning and micro-partitioning without additional features. Enabling Virtual I/O Server and Partition Load Manger on the 9405/9406 requires the optional #7940 feature (Advanced Power Virtualization). The #7966 feature is unique to the model 515 and separate and distinct from the #7940 Advanced Power Virtualization feature, which can be ordered on other IBM System i5 models 520, 525, 550, 570, and 595. As stated on these System i5 models, partitioning is included as part of the base System i5 capabilities. The #7940 feature is ordered to enable Virtual I/O Server capabilities and Partition Load Manager (PLM) capabilities for AIX and Linux partitions.

There are several pSeries-based IBM Redbooks publications on APV.

Note: Error 400000C4 when trying to modify partition configuration can be a result of not having feature code 7966 installed for partitioning.

Ordering feature 7966 will generate a Virtualization Engine Technology (VET) code that must be entered through the attached Hardware Management Console (HMC) or through the Advanced System Management Interface (ASMI).

Once the VET code has been entered, the following capabilities will show True:
oRPA I/O hosting
oSubprocessor partitioning
oLPAR creation allowed
