Console Card Locations for POWER6, POWER7, POWER8 and POWER9 Servers

Troubleshooting

Problem

This document provides information on the console card locations for stand-alone IBM POWER6, POWER7, POWER8 and POWER9 servers.
When using any of these card slots the LAN console always needs to be assigned to the T1 resource.  This is either the top or far right card depending on how your system is situated.

Note: C7 has a known defect that can cause the card to not report in on a platform IPL on models E1C, E2C, E4C and E6C. AC power must be removed to resolve. We recommend moving card to new slot C5 (AC power has to be removed to move the card as C7 does not power off with server). Errors include B6006973 B7006952, B7006973 and B7006985.

Notes:
1. Twinax console is not supported in the system unit; it can be assigned as console only on HMC-managed servers when located in an expansion unit.
2. Serial/Direct console is not supported on POWER 7 servers. It is not supported on any model with IBM i 7.1 or later.
3. LAN console can only use the first physical port in the HEA. This is the top port (rackmount) or right-most port (deskside) on the HEA.
4. LAN console can only use the top port of the dual and quad port Ethernet cards (5706/5707/5767/5768/576F).

PCI-E FC 5767,5768,9055(5767),*5899(576F),*5260(576F)
PCI-X 5706/5707
* FC 5260 (low profile card) is supported for console on 8231-E1C/D and 8231-E2C/D models or HMC Managed servers. Both 5260 and 5899 require the following PTFs for console use:
  • V611:
    Minimum levels:
    6.1.1 Resave RS-H or MF55000, MF53749, MF53631.
    Additional recommended PTFs:
    MF55719, MF55728, MF55681, MF55639

    V710:
    Minimum levels: V7R1M0 Technical Refresh 4 - resave RS-E or MF99004
    Additional recommended PTFs:
    MF55729, MF55682

For a full listing of Ethernet cards supported for use by console, see IBM i Information Center topic Hardware requirements for Ethernet at the following URL: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/iseries/v7r1m0/index.jsp?topic=%2Frzajy%2Frzajyethernetioas.htm
5. Ethernet cards in the C1 sub-cage are not supported for console.
6. V7R1M0 RS-D requires PTF MF54188 be applied before configuring another port on the same card for use with TCP.

65+21 functions
D1 = Disable Ethernet embedded port

D2 = Disable add-on LAN adapter

E1 = Enable Ethernet embedded port

E2 = Enable add-on LAN adapter

Bx = Enable LAN adapter in location Cx.

Fx = Enable asynchronous adapter in slot Cx.

Notes:
1. The Bx and Fx series both refer to slot location code -Cx, not the slot number. For example, to enable the card in location C2 (slot 1), you should use function B2.
2. a. On servers with HEAs, the Bx series is not enabled unless D1 - Disable Ethernet embedded port and E2 - Enable add-on LAN adapter are run first.
b. On servers without HEAs, the Bx series is enabled only if the server was ordered with console type specify and load source specify/preload. Otherwise, E2 must be run first.
3. On servers without HEAs, the Bx series must be used to set the slot if there is more than one supported card installed. This is not set by manufacturing preload.
4. The functions and values available vary by model as described in search order above. Only locations that are valid for the particular model are enabled.
