Data Transfer TO/FROM QTEMP Library Not Allowed

Troubleshooting

Problem

This document explains why QTEMP library cannot be used to transfer files TO/FROM using Client Access or iSeries Access Data Transfer.

Resolving The Problem

Important Note: This document discusses Client Access for Microsoft Windows 95 and Windows NT, Client Access Express, IBM iSeries Access, and IBM System i Access products. These names essentially refer to the same product; however, the functionality and name changed over the last several releases. For the purposes of this document, the terms Client Access, Client Access Express, iSeries Access, and System i Access can be used interchangeably. Where a difference is important, the version of the product is used to identify the differences.

When transferring files from QTEMP library with older clients, the transfer generates message IWS9812 - File &2 in library &1 could not be found. iSeries Access data transfer fails with either message CWBTF0036 or message CWBTF0040.

When transferring files to QTEMP library with older clients, the transfer generates message IWS2038 - A library name of QTEMP is not allowed if file &1 is to be created. iSeries Access data transfer fails with message CWBTF0040.

Answer:

QTEMP is a temporary library created for each job. Every QTEMP library is private and is inaccessible from other jobs. If a user is signed on via Client Access (or iSeries Access) and has a emulation session, a virtual printer session, and a shared folder session, the user has three objects of type *USRSPC in QTEMP library (one for each job).

The error messages are issued because a file cannot be downloaded from a temporary library; for example, QTEMP. In addition, transferring a file from the PC to QTEMP is not allowed because data transfer knows QTEMP is a temporary library.
