IBM Support

Configure native SMTP to co-exist with Domino SMTP (Dual stack) on the same IBMi

Troubleshooting

Problem

To set up dual stack for SMTP, bind the Domino server to one IP address and bind the native iSeries SMTP server to another IP address. Both SMTP servers can then run at the same time

Resolving The Problem

To set up dual stack for SMTP, bind the Domino server to one IP address and bind the native iSeries SMTP server to another IP address. Both SMTP servers can then run at the same time. Instructions for binding the Domino server can be obtained from Domino support.

You can use iSeries navigator to set the bindings to a specific IP address by going to the SMTP properties (network -> servers -> TCP/IP -> SMTP (right click and select properties)). Select the bindings tab and choose select an interface to bind to a specific IP address on the iSeries for the native SMTP server..

To set up the iSeries SMTP server to bind to specific IP address, do the following:
1. a On the operating system command line, type the following:

CHGSMTPA

Press F4 to prompt.

b Page down to the INTERFACE/DOMAIN ASSOCIATION parameter.
c Change the parameter value to *LIST.
d Press the Enter key.
2. a On the operating system command line, type the following:

ADDSMTPLE

Press F4 to prompt.

b LIST TYPE *SVRBIND
c Press the Enter key.
d Type the IP address you are going to bind the SMTP server to.
e Press the Enter key.
3. a On the operating system command line, type the following:

ADDSMTPLE

Press F4 to prompt.

a LIST TYPE *CLTBIND
b Press the Enter key.
c Type the IP address you used above.
d Press the Enter key.

To activate, do the following:
1. On the operating system command line, type the following:

ENDTCPSVR *SMTP

Press the Enter key.
2. On the operating system command line, type the following:

STRTCPSVR *SMTP

Press the Enter key.

To verify, do the following:
1. On the operating system command line, type the following:

NETSTAT

Press the Enter key. Select Option 3.
2. Look at SMTP connection in the LOCAL PORT column.
3. Display the one in LISTEN STATUS, and verify that it is associated with QTCP user profile and the IP address listed is the one you specified above.
These same IP address bindings can also be easily managed using the IBM Navigator for i (browser interface) interfaces, by accessing SMTP Properties and selecting the Bindings tab. In the example shown below, Native SMTP has been bound to the 9.5.65.134 IP address.

Note: The other SMTP server (Domino being the example used in this document) must also be bound to a specific IP address different from the one used by Native SMTP to avoid IP/port contention where both servers are attempting to use the same resources. This typically results in one server or the other failing to start, because the expected IP address(es) and port were already in use by another server. Instructions for binding the other server would be provided in the documentation or support for that non-native SMTP server offering.
