How to Find the HMC Alternate Restart Device Tag for a Desired Tape or Optical Device

Troubleshooting

Problem

This document shows how to select a desired i5 tape or optical device as the alternate restart device in a HMC profile.

Resolving The Problem

To locate the desired alternate restart device, you should do the following:

1.

Locate the resource used by the device.

a. Issue the DSPDEVD OPTxx command (where OPTxx is the tape/optical device you want to use (TAP01, OPT01, OPT02, and so on).
b. Note the Resource Name assigned to the device.
2.Issue the DSPHDWRSC TYPE(*STG) OUTPUT(*PRINT) command.
3.Display the spooled file created:

a. Issue the WRKSPLF command.
b. Locate the last QSYSPRT file that has "User Data" DSPHDWRC.
c. Select Option 5 (Display).
4.Search on your device:

a. On the "find" line, type OPT02 (where OPT02 is the uppercase name of the resource found in Step 1).
b. Press F16 (Find).
c. Continue to press F16 until you locate the resource in the Storage Resource List section.
d. Note the location of the IOA (DCxx) that controls the optical device. This is the location code you want to set using your HMC.

Here is an example of locating the IOA (U787A.001.DNZ0BWF-P1-C8) for resources TAP01 and OPT01 on my system:

To tag the Alt-IPL resource do the following from the HMC:

Note: For an Alt-IPL device, the slot should be assigned to the partition as either required or desired. Keep in mind though that a desired slot might be in use by another partition at the time of the D IPL.

1. Expand Server and Partition, Server Management.
2. Expand your server, Partitions, then the partition.
3. Right click the profile and select Properties.
4. Click Tagged IO.
5. Click the Select button next to alternate IPL device.
6. Expand the unit located above (click the key in front of the unit name).
7. Expand each bus until you find the slot (Cx) of the IOA you found above.
8. Click the desired slot.
9. Click OK.
10. Click OK.

The change will go into effect the next time you activate the profile.
