Drawer Redirection for HP PCL5 Compatible Printers

Troubleshooting

Problem

This document provides instructions for changing how Host Print Transform (HPT) does its paper source or drawer selection when printing on HP PCL5 compatible printers.

Resolving The Problem

This document provides instructions for changing how Host Print Transform (HPT) does its paper source or drawer selection when printing on HP PCL5 compatible printers. This is done by retrieving and modifying a Workstation Customization Table (WSCST) and changing the Customizing Paper Drawer Selection (DWRSLT) and Additional Drawer Table Entry (ADDDRWTBLE) tags. There is also information about changing the Drawer Number (DWRNBR) tags for older versions of the operating system.

Drawer Redirection for HP PCL5 Compatible Printers

The following video provides information on drawer redirection when printing from an IBM i System.

Before Creating a Modified WSCST Object for Drawer Redirection Issues

Most HP PCL controls are standard for a wide range of HP LaserJet and compatible printers, including printers from HP, IBM, InfoPrint Solutions Company, Lexmark, Ricoh, Xerox, and other manufacturers. However, the HP PCL5 Paper Source controls are an exception. The structure of the HP PCL5 Paper Source controls are the same for all HP PCL compatible printers; however, the value used to select a particular paper tray can differ between manufacturers and even between models of printers from the same manufacturer.

Therefore, if the value suggested for a particular paper tray does not work for a given printer, in other words, if experiencing drawer selection or paper source issues such as spooled files pulling from the wrong paper tray or needing to press a button on the printer hardware to get spooled files to print, it is recommended that you first try different values for the Manufacturer type and model (MFRTYPMDL) parameter to see if that resolves or at least reduces the effects of the problem.

For example:
o If you are currently specifying *HP4 or *HP5 for the MFRTYPMDL parameter but that does not work, then try specifying *HP5SI and *HP5000 to see if any of those settings work any better.
o If you are currently specifying *LEXOPTRAT to get spooled files to compress to 13.3 Characters Per Inch (CPI) instead of 17.1 CPI but the drawer selection is not correct, try specifying *LEXOPTRA or *RICOHAP3200 to see if any of those settings work any better.
o If you are currently specifying *HPCOLORLJ or *LEXOPTRATC to print color text but the drawer selection is not correct, try specifying *RICOHCL2000 to see if that setting works any better (and to compress to 13.3 CPI instead of 17.1 CPI). If the drawer selection is correct, but want to compress to 13.3 CPI instead of 17.1 CPI, then try specifying *LEXMARKC or *LEXMARKC750 instead.

If trying different values for the MFRTYPMDL parameter does not provide a setting that works for all of the paper trays needed, then start with using the MFRTYPMDL value that works best. Run the Retrieve WSCST source (RTVWSCST) command, specify the best MFRTYPMDL setting that you can find, so you create your modified WSCST object based on the closest match. Also, if needed, contact the printer manufacturer to find out the HP PCL5 Paper Source values needed for your particular printer model.

  • - Changing Default Drawer Selections

    Search on DRAWER. It will lead you to a tag called:

    :DWRSLT
      DRAWER=DRAWER1
      DATA = '1B266C3148'X. (Upper paper cassette)
    This is where you want to change the DATA value. Change it to:
    DATA = '1B266C3448'X. (was drawer 2 value)
    :DWRSLT
      DRAWER=DRAWER2
      DATA = '1B266C3448'X. This is where you want to change the DATA value. Change it to:
      DATA = '1B266C3148'X. (Top paper cassette tray)

  • - Set Up Envelope Feeder

    Search on envelope. It will lead you to a tag called:

    :DWRSLT
     DRAWER=ENVELOPE
     DATA = '1B266C3368314F'X.

    This is where you want to change the DATA value. Change it to:

      DATA = '1B266C3668314F'X.

    This will allow access to the envelope feeder bin.

  • - New Method for Accessing Drawer 3 and Above

    Support for the ADDDRWTBL (Additional Drawer Table) tag is available in more recent versions of the operating system. The old method of modifying the DWRNBR (Drawer Number) tag can still be used to access drawer 3, but that tag is more difficult to setup when printing to drawers higher than 3. Therefore, modifying the ADDDRWTBL tag is recommended for handling drawers 3 and above. However, the old method is described below, if needed.

    If additional drawers are needed, then another tag can be used for access. The tag is :ADDDRWTBL. An example for usage on a HP8000 with 5 drawers is as follows. Getting drawer 5 to work has been a problem. Because the HP8000 will default to that drawer unless changed in its configuration, just leaving off the NUMBER = 5 from the list should get the printout to the correct drawer.

    :ADDDRWTBL.
    :ADDDRWTBLE
     NUMBER=    3
     DATA ='1B266C3548'X.
    :ADDDRWTBLE
     NUMBER=    4
     DATA ='1B266C323048'X.

    :ADDDRWTBLE
     NUMBER=    5
     DATA ='1B266C3848'X.
    :EADDDRWTBL.

    Note: The source code for some of the newer system-supplied workstation customizing objects already contain the ADDDRWTBL tag, so search the source member before adding this tag. If this tag is found, then additional ADDDRWTBLE tags must be added between the ADDDRWTBL and EADDDRWTBL tags. If not found, then the new ADDDRWTBL, ADDDRWTBLE and EADDDRWTBL tags can be added most anywhere, but a good location would be just before the Raster Mode (RASTERMODE) tag near the bottom of the WSCST source member.

  • - Old Method for Accessing Drawer 3

    The DWRNBR (Drawer Number) tag is used to access drawers beyond the first two drawers. If the printer has only three drawers, you can hardcode to drawer three. If additional drawers are required, use the Open end option. o Specific Drawer 3 Option:

    :DWRNBR /* Drawer 3 definition for Optra */ VAROFFSET = 0 VARLEN = 0 VARTYPE = CHRDEC DATA = '1B266C3448'X.
    o Open DWRNBR tag Option, for Open ended source drawers:
    :DWRNBR VAROFFSET = 3 VARLEN = 2 VARTYPE = CHRDEC DATA = '1B266C000048'X.

  • - Specifying the Drawer Page Size (Particularly for Drawer 3 and Above)

    The Drawer Page Size (DWRPAGSIZ), Drawer Page Size Entry (DWRPAGSIZE), and End Drawer Page Size (EDWRPAGSIZ) tags can be used to define the size of the paper present in a specific source drawer. In raster mode, this paper size is used to allocate the raster page buffer. Host Print Transform (HPT) also uses this paper size to determine if Computer Output Reduction (COR) processing is required. If the drawer size is not specified, then HPT will use the paper size specified in each spooled file. If printing using a *LAN 3812 device description or a PC5250 printer session (or a third party printer session) that is setup to use HPT, then the values for the Paper source 1 (PPRSRC1) and Paper source 2 (PPRSRC2) parameters can also have an effect. You can define a drawer size for one or more source drawers. This is done by starting with the Drawer Page Size (DWRPAGSIZ) tag, specifying one or more Drawer Page Size Entry (DWRPAGSIZE) tags, and then ending with a End Drawer Page Size (EDWRPAGSIZ) tag. There are no parameters for the DWRPAGSIZ and EDWRPAGSIZ tags, but there are parameters for the DWRPAGSIZE tag. The syntax for these tags is:

    :DWRPAGSIZ. :DWRPAGSIZE DRAWER = 0-255 PAGWTH = Page width PAGLEN = Page length. :DWRPAGSIZE ... :EDWRPAGSIZ.
    where the DRAWER is set to 0 for the envelope drawer or 1 - 255 for source drawers 1 through 255, the PAGWTH specifies the drawer page width in 1/1440 inch increments, and the PAGLEN specifies the drawer page length in 1/1440 inch increments. Note: The Drawer Page Size Entry (DWRPAGSIZE) tag is perhaps most useful for defining the paper size for drawers 3 and above because there are no parameters in a printer device description to specify the paper size for drawers 3 and above. However, specifying a DWRPAGSIZE tag for DRAWER = 1 or DRAWER = 2 will override the Paper source 1 (PPRSRC1) or Paper source 2 (PPRSRC2) parameters that are specified in a *LAN 3812 device description, a PC5250 printer session, or a third-party printer session. Specifying a DWRPAGSIZE tag for DRAWER = 1 or DRAWER = 2 can also be used to define the paper size for these drawers when using a Remote Output Queue, which does not have PPRSRC1 and PPRSRC2 parameters. Drawer Page Size Entry (DWRPAGSIZE) Tag Example The following is an example of the Drawer Page Size (DWRPAGSIZ), Drawer Page Size Entry (DWRPAGSIZE), and End Drawer Page Size (EDWRPAGSIZ) tags. In this example, several DWRPAGSIZE tags are used to specify Letter sized (8.5 x 11 inch) paper for DRAWER = 1, Legal sized (8.5 x 14 inch) paper for DRAWER = 2, A4 sized 210mm x 297mm (8.3 x 11.7 inch) paper for DRAWER = 3, A5 sized 148mm x 210mm (5.83 x 8.3 inch) paper for DRAWER - 4, and Executive sized (7.25 x 10.5 inch) paper for DRAWER = 5:
    :DWRPAGSIZ. :DWRPAGSIZE /* Drawer 1 is 12240 x 15840 (Letter) */ DRAWER = 1 PAGWTH = 12240 PAGLEN = 15840. :DWRPAGSIZE /* Drawer 2 is 12240 x 20160 (Legal) */ DRAWER = 2 PAGWTH = 12240 PAGLEN = 20160. :DWRPAGSIZE /* Drawer 3 is 11952 x 16848 (A4) */ DRAWER = 3 PAGWTH = 11952 PAGLEN = 16848. :DWRPAGSIZE /* Drawer 4 is 8352 x 11952 (A5) */ DRAWER = 4 PAGWTH = 8352 PAGLEN = 11952. :DWRPAGSIZE /* Drawer 5 is 10440 x 15120 (Executive) */ DRAWER = 5 PAGWTH = 10440 PAGLEN = 15120. :EDWRPAGSIZ.
    As mentioned above, if these settings are used with a *LAN 3812 device description, PC5250 printer session, or a third-party printer session, then specifying the DWRPAGSIZE tags for DRAWER = 1 and DRAWER = 2 will override the settings in the Paper source 1 (PPRSRC1) and Paper source 2 (PPRSRC2) parameters. If these settings are used with a Remote Output Queue, then they will define the paper sizes for drawers 1 and 2. Note: For a list of the page sizes in 1/1440 inch refer to the section titled List of Standard Paper Sizes.

    The following is a list of standard HP PCL5 Paper Source controls. The information in the following table has been derived from a document on the HP website entitled HP LaserJet Printers - PCL Commands, Basic Page Formatting and Font Selection. However, some HP LaserJet printers require different Paper Source commands than those listed below. Information on the correct PCL commands to use can be found in documentation specific to those printers.

    Paper Source Command (ASCII Text) Command (Hexadecimal Value)

  • - Paper Source Controls for HP LaserJet 2410/2420/2430 Printers

    The following is a list of the HP PCL5 Paper Source controls for the HP LaserJet 2410, HP LaserJet 2420, and HP LaserJet 2430 printers, which has been derived from documentation on the HP Web site:

    Paper Source Command (ASCII Text) Command (Hexadecimal Value)
    In Tray (current tray) Ec&l0H 1B266C3048
    Tray 2 (250-sheet) Ec&l1H 1B266C3148
    Manual Feed in Tray 1 Ec&l2H 1B266C3248
    Multipurpose Tray (or Auxiliary Tray) Ec&l4H 1B266C3448
    Tray 3 (500-sheet) Ec&l5H 1B266C3548
    Auto Select Ec&l7H 1B266C3748
    The HP LaserJet 2410/2420/2430 printers use values for the HP PCL5 Paper Source controls that are similar to the values used for the HP LaserJet 4 printer. Therefore, in this case, the best option is to create a modified Workstation Customizing Object based on *HP4, which has the following settings for the Customizing Paper Drawer Selection (DWRSLT) tags:
    :DWRSLT
      DRAWER=PAPER
      DATA ='1B266C3248'X.
    :DWRSLT
      DRAWER=ENVELOPE
      DATA ='1B266C3668314F'X.
    :DWRSLT
      DRAWER=DRAWER1
      DATA ='1B266C3148'X.
    :DWRSLT
      DRAWER=DRAWER2
      DATA ='1B266C3448'X.
    and then change the settings for the Customizing Paper Drawer Selection (DWRSLT) tag for DRAWER2 to send an Ec&l5H or '1B266C3548'X instead:
    :DWRSLT
      DRAWER=DRAWER2
      DATA ='1B266C3548'X.
    Note: The above DWRSLT tags should cause DRAWER(1) to map to Tray 2, which is the first tray after the Manual or Auxiliary Tray (Tray 1), and DRAWER(2) to map to Tray 3, assuming that each of these trays contain PLAIN paper with the appropriate paper size.

The HP LaserJet 4100, 4100mfp, 4200 and 4300 printer series have support for only 20 40 HCI trays which correspond to the Additional Drawer Table Entry (ADDDRWTBLE) tags for NUMBER = 101 through NUMBER = 120.

  • - Paper Source Controls for HP LaserJet 4250/4350 Printers

    The following is a list of the HP PCL5 Paper Source controls for the HP LaserJet 4250 and HP LaserJet 4350 printers, which has been derived from documentation on the HP website:

    Paper Source Command (ASCII Text) Command (Hexadecimal Value)
    In Tray (current tray) Ec&l0H 1B266C3048
    Tray 2 (500-sheet) Ec&l1H 1B266C3148
    Manual Feed in Tray 1 Ec&l2H 1B266C3248
    Multipurpose Tray (or Auxiliary Tray) Ec&l4H 1B266C3448
    Tray 3 (500-sheet) Ec&l5H 1B266C3548
    Envelope Feeder Ec&l6H 1B266C3648
    Auto Select Ec&l7H 1B266C3748
    Tray 4 (1500-sheet) Ec&l8H 1B266C3848
    Tray 5 (4000-sheet) Ec&l9H 1B266C3948
    The HP LaserJet 4250/4350 printers use different values for the HP PCL5 Paper Source controls than the HP LaserJet 4200/4300 printers, but they are similar to the values used for the HP LaserJet 4 printer. Therefore, in this case, the best option is to create a modified Workstation Customizing Object based on *HP4, not *HP4000, which has the following settings for the Customizing Paper Drawer Selection (DWRSLT) tags:
    :DWRSLT DRAWER=PAPER DATA ='1B266C3248'X. :DWRSLT DRAWER=ENVELOPE DATA ='1B266C3668314F'X. :DWRSLT DRAWER=DRAWER1 DATA ='1B266C3148'X. :DWRSLT DRAWER=DRAWER2 DATA ='1B266C3548'X.
    and then add the following settings for the Additional Drawer Table (ADDDRWTBL), Additional Drawer Table Entry (ADDDRWTBLE), and End Additional Drawer Table Entry (EADDDRWTBL) tags for the extra paper trays:
    :ADDDRWTBL.
      :ADDDRWTBLE NUMBER= 3 DATA ='1B266C3848'X.
      :ADDDRWTBLE NUMBER= 4 DATA ='1B266C3948'X.
    :EADDDRWTBL.
    Note: The above DWRSLT and ADDDRWTBLE tags should cause DRAWER(1) to map to Tray 2, which is the first tray after the Manual or Auxiliary Tray (Tray 1), DRAWER(2) to map to Tray 3, DRAWER(3) to map to Tray 4, and DRAWER(4) to map to Tray 5, assuming that each of these trays contain PLAIN paper with the appropriate paper size.

  • - Paper Type Controls for HP LaserJet Compatible Printers

    The operating system and Host Print Transform (HPT) have no support for different paper types. Therefore, there is no way to automatically print to a paper tray that has other than plain paper. HPT will use the Paper Source and Paper Size PCL controls to select the appropriate paper tray, but it does not send a Paper Type PCL control, so the printer defaults to using plain paper only. Therefore, spooled files normally print only on paper trays set up for plain paper. However, a paper tray that has been set up for a specific paper type can be selected by adding the appropriate HP PCL5 Paper Type control to the Customizing Paper Drawer Selection (DWRSLT), Additional Drawer Table Entry (ADDDRWTBLE) tag or DWRNBR (Drawer Number) tag. The following table shows the Paper Type string that must be added to the DATA portion of these tags to select the various paper types supported by HP LaserJet and compatible printers. The information in the following table has been derived from the IBM PCL5e and PostScript Level 2 Technical Reference, S544-5344-03, and from the HP PCL 5 Comparison Guide Addendum. Note that not all paper types and PCL5 Paper Type commands will be available or will work with all printers.

    Note: For custom paper, replace CustomType with the name of the custom paper type specified in the printer hardware and replace the “#” with the number of characters in the paper type name, plus 1. Examples of Sending PCL5 Paper Type Control in DWRSLT and ADDDRWTBLE Tags To select Letterhead paper when DRAWER(1) is specified by a spooled file, add an HP PCL5 Paper Type control for "Letterhead" ('1B266E313157644C657474657268656164'X) to the end of the DWRSLT tag for DRAWER1. For example:
    :DWRSLT DRAWER=DRAWER1 /* Select paper tray and request Letterhead paper */ DATA ='1B266C31481B266E313157644C657474657268656164'X. /* Ec& l 1 H Ec& n 1 1 W d L e t t e r h e a d */
    To select Pre-punched paper when DRAWER(2) is specified by a spooled file, add an HP PCL5 Paper Type control for "Prepunched" ('1B266E313157645072657072696E746564'X) to the end of the DWRSLT tag for DRAWER2. For example:
    :DWRSLT DRAWER=DRAWER2 /* Select paper tray and request Prepunched paper */ DATA ='1B266C31481B266E313157645072657072696E746564'X. /* Ec& l 1 H Ec& n 1 1 W d P r e p u n c h e d */
    To select Preprinted paper when DRAWER(3) is specified in the spooled file, add an HP PCL5 Paper Type control for "Preprinted" to the end of the ADDDRWTBLE tag for drawer 3. The default setting for this tag is:
    :ADDDRWTBLE NUMBER= 3 /* Select paper tray and request Preprinted paper */ DATA ='1B266C35481B266E313157645072657072696E746564'X. /* Ec& l 1 H Ec& n 1 1 W d P r e p r i n t e d */

  • - Specifying Paper Source for a Particular Paper Size

    Host Print Transform (HPT) sends the HP PCL commands to select the paper source and the page orientation before it sends the HP PCL command to specify the page size. Therefore, the PCL Paper Source command can be appended to the DATA string on the Page Size Entry (PAGSIZE) tags and it will take precedence over the PCL Paper Source command specified in the Customizing Paper Drawer Selection (DWRSLT) and Additional Drawer Table Entry (ADDDRWTBLE) tags. For example, if both Letter sized (8.5 x 11 inch) spooled files and Legal sized (8.5 x 14 inch) spooled files are generated with the Source drawer (DRAWER) parameter in the spooled file attributes set to 1, but a PCL Paper Source command is needed to request Legal sized paper from Tray 2 or Tray 3, then that command can be added to the end of the PAGSIZE tag for Legal sized paper. The default Page Size Entry (PAGSIZE) tags for *INFOPRINT1140 (and several other MFRTYPMDL settings) are:

    :PAGSIZXFM. :PAGSIZE PAGWTH= 8352 PAGLEN=11952 DATA ='1B266C313341'X. :PAGSIZE PAGWTH=11952 PAGLEN=16848 DATA ='1B266C323641'X. :PAGSIZE PAGWTH=16838 PAGLEN=23811 DATA ='1B266C323741'X. :PAGSIZE PAGWTH=10368 PAGLEN=14544 DATA ='1B266C343541'X. :PAGSIZE PAGWTH=14570 PAGLEN=20636 DATA ='1B266C343641'X. :PAGSIZE PAGWTH=10440 PAGLEN=15120 DATA ='1B266C303141'X. :PAGSIZE PAGWTH=12240 PAGLEN=15840 DATA ='1B266C303241'X. :PAGSIZE PAGWTH=12240 PAGLEN=20160 DATA ='1B266C303341'X. :PAGSIZE PAGWTH=15840 PAGLEN=24480 DATA ='1B266C303641'X. :PAGSIZE PAGWTH= 7920 PAGLEN=12240 DATA ='1B266C313541'X. :PAGSIZE PAGWTH=12240 PAGLEN=18720 DATA ='1B266C313041'X. :EPAGSIZXFM.
    Legal sized paper is 8.5 inches x 14 inches, which comes out to 12240 x 20160 in 1/1440 inch, which is the unit of measure using in the PAGSIZE tags, so the following PAGSIZE tag will must be changed to add the PCL Paper Source control:
    :PAGSIZE PAGWTH=12240 PAGLEN=20160 DATA ='1B266C303341'X.
    If testing shows that DRAWER(2) causes spooled files to pull from the Legal tray, then the DATA portion of the DWRSLT tag for DRAWER=DRAWER2 can be copied and added to the end of the DATA portion of this PAGSIZE tag. If testing shows that DRAWER(3) causes spooled files to pull from the Legal tray, then the DATA portion of the ADDDRWTBLE tag for NUMBER=3 can be copied instead. Otherwise, other methods might need to be used to decide which PCL Paper Source command to add to the DATA portion of the PAGSIZE tag. The results will look something like the following:
    :PAGSIZE PAGWTH=12240 PAGLEN=20160 DATA ='1B266C3033411B266C3448'X.
    where 1B266C303341 is the PCL Paper Size command and 1B266C3448 is the PCL Paper Source command needed to select Legal sized paper from the paper tray that contains Legal sized paper on your printer. Note: The above controls are an example and might not work with your particular printer without using different settings in the PCL Paper Source command. Therefore, you must first identify the proper PCL Paper Source command needed to select the paper tray that contains Legal sized paper on your printer. You might be able to determine this by looking at one of the above sections, by referring to a technical reference for your printer, by discussing this with your printer hardware manufacturer, or by using trial-and-error with different settings for the DRAWER parameter in the spooled file attributes or with different settings in the DWRSLT or ADDDRWTBLE tags in a modified Workstation Customizing Object.
