List of Default Font IDs Based on Font Range

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

This document lists the default font IDs for each font range available on the operating system.

Resolving the problem

This document lists the default font IDs for each font range available on the operating system. The default font IDs are used whenever an operating system spooled file has the font ID set to *CPI. The default font IDs are listed by font pitch and also by font range.

This document was last updated on 4 April 2014.

Notes:
1. The font pitch is also referred to as the Characters per Inch or CPI.
2. The term PSM refers to Proportionally Spaced Mode fonts. For proportionally spaced fonts, characters vary in width depending on the character being printed (for example, i is a narrow character, and W is a wide character).

The font is based on 12 Characters Per Inch (CPI) or 5/60ths of an inch. More specifically, each character can be one of 5 different widths: 3/60, 4/60, 5/60, 6/60, or 7/60 of an inch. An i is 3/60 of an inch wide, a space is 5/60 of an inch wide, and a W is 7/60 of an inch wide.

    • - How Characters Per Inch (CPI) Corresponds to Point Size

] When dealing with a monospaced font, such as font 416, every character has the same width. In this case, the pitch or Characters Per Inch (CPI) has a direct relationship to the point size: CPI = 120 / Pointsize The following chart shows the most common point size and CPI values:

Point Size Characters Per Inch (CPI)
      24 5
      12 10
      10 12
      9 13.3

    • - Table 21 Font Information from the Printer Device Programming Manual

] Appendix D Working with Fonts, Font Character Sets, Code Pages, CHRIDs, and Coded Fonts in the Printer Device Programming manual, SC41-5713-04, contains several tables with more detailed information on fonts, including a list of Font IDs and their corresponding fonts. The iSeries Printer Device Programming V5R4 (SC41-5713-06) is available at: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/iseries/v5r4/topic/books/sc415713.pdf The following information was copied directly from Table 21. Font Information from the V5R4M0 (R540) version of the Printer Device Programming manual (though with a few corrections): The legend and table below provide information about each font. This information could save you time in trial-and-error testing when choosing a font for your application

    • - What Does a Font Look Like?

] How a particular font looks when printed can vary from printer to printer or can depend on whether the spooled file is printed using Host Print Transform (HPT) or Print Services Facility/400 (PSF/400). This can be affected by which fonts are available in the printer hardware, whether you are using HPT with a modified Workstation Customizing Object (WSCST) that requests particular fonts, or whether you are using PSF/400 and are using font substitution. There is no way to provide a sample of each possible font in this document. However, Appendix I What Does a Font Look Like? in the Printer Device Programming manual, SC41-5713-04, contains instructions and source code that allow you to print an FGID, font character set, or coded font and see what it looks like. The source code provided is data description specifications (DDS), which can be used with the following high-level languages: o C o COBOL o PASCAL o RPG To print the FGID, font character set, or coded font you want to see, you should edit the DDS source and insert the correct identifier or name.
