Application of this PTF may disable or render ineffective programs that
use system memory addresses not generated by the IBM translator,
including programs that circumvent control technology designed to limit
interactive capacity to purchased levels.  This PTF may be a prerequisite
for future PTFs.  By applying this PTF you authorize and agree to the
foregoing.

This PTF is subject to the terms of the 'IBM License Agreement for Machine
Code', the terms of which were provided in a printed document that was
delivered with the machine.

APAR Error Description / Circumvention

-----------------------------------------------
Production system crashed when static directory reached limit
for entries. Analysis showed that this was due to a long running
query with large allocations. Eventually, the static directory
became badly fragmented and could no longer satisfy an
allocation request, causing the system to terminate.

CORRECTION FOR APAR MA47947 :
-----------------------------
Certain flavors of queries with Cartesian joins that produce
massive result sets were resulting in relatively small storage
allocations, resulting in pressure on the temporary directory,
which in turn put pressure on the static directory, eventually
causing the system to reach a static directory limit and crash,
even though the actual storage used in the system ASP was not
yet at a critical level.

Changes were made to increase the extension size dynamically
reducing the impact on the directories for these types of
queries.  However, these types of queries can still have a major
impact on system resources and should be monitored closely or
prohibited to run on production systems.  In this case, the
query would have eventually consumed all storage in the system
ASP, unless manual intervention was performed or by setting the
Maximum temporary storage (MAXTMPSTG) job description parameter
appropriately.  The support enabling queries to honor MAXTMPSTG
may require the application of PTFs in older releases.
