Application of this PTF may disable or render ineffective programs that
use system memory addresses not generated by the IBM translator,
including programs that circumvent control technology designed to limit
interactive capacity to purchased levels.  This PTF may be a prerequisite

APAR Error Description / Circumvention

-------------------------------------------------
Corruption of Main Storage can occur during a Main store dump
(MSD) on systems with large permanent directories that have a
MSD reserved area greater than 4GB.

CORRECTION FOR APAR 'MA46868' :
-------------------------------
The IBM i firmware has a problem copying or transferring data
greater in length than 4GB during a main store dump. Main
storage data can be corrupted in the storage exceeding 4GB. The
corrupted memory causes the MSD to be marked as likely damaged.
The corruption could cause data to be lost in some rare cases.
The subset dump will fail and a full dump will be taken. The
user may not notice any problems. The corruption may not be
noticed until a later date. The corruption will hinder the
analysis of the MSD by IBM i service.

The LIC MSDMgr code will be changed to limit the size of the
data dumped by the firmware to 4GB. This will prevent the
corruption.

The main drawback will be less working storage available during
the MSD IPL, although 4GB will be sufficient in most cases. In
rare cases the working storage of only 4GB may prevent the MSD
IPL and the MSD will be lost. Service should be contacted to
analyze the problem before the partition is IPLed

At a later date, when the firmware fix packs are released
another PTF will be released removing the 4GB limit.

When a firmware fix is available the copy size restriction will
be removed. Currently, the firmware fix is projected in fix
packs that will be released over the next several months for
Power 7, Power 8, and Power 9.

NOTE: The PTF can be applied without an IPL but the copy limit
will not be set until the next IPL.
