Question

IBM Java for AIX Reference : Java Version 6.0 Support Extension

Answer

The purpose of this document is to provide details about the IBM Java Version 6.0 Support Extension for applications that use the standalone IBM Java for AIX. This support extension does not apply to applications that use IBM Java bundled with other IBM products (e.g., WebSphere, Tivoli, Sterling, etc.)
Overview
Details

End Of Support

As documented on the IBM Java life cycle web page:

https://developer.ibm.com/javasdk/support/lifecycle

IBM Java Version 6.0 will no longer be supported and no fixes will be provided after September 30, 2017.

Service Extension

As a courtesy to our valued customers, the end of support has been extended for IBM Java Version 6.0 until November 30, 2017. This support extension is provided to IBM customers free of charge, will not require customers to register for a support service contract extension, and will automatically become effective on October 1, 2017.

Since this extended support agreement applies only to IBM Java for AIX V 6.0 which is included (or packaged) with AIX, the IBM Java life cycle page in the "End of Support" section above, will not be updated with the new end of service date. This web page is the official and only IBM documentation that contains the terms and conditions for obtaining IBM Java for AIX support during this support extension.

The IBM Java for AIX 6.0 support extension applies to:

  • Applications that use IBM Java for AIX 6.0 at the most recently published release of Java 6.0 service listed on the web pages:

http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=isg3T1022644#ibmjava6032
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=isg3T1022644#ibmjava6064

  • Applications that use the IBM Java for AIX included (or bundled) with the base AIX operating system
  • IBM clients that have a current and active AIX software support contract
  • IBM AIX operating system only

Getting Support

IBM clients with a current and active AIX software support subscription can open support calls (e.g., PMR) only for questions or issues pertaining to, or when using, the most recent release (at the time the support call is opened) of IBM Java for AIX 6.0. Prior to submitting or receiving an ifix for IBM Java for AIX 6.0, all customers must demonstrate that the reported issue does in fact occur with the most recent release (at the time the support call is opened). The ifixes will be provided at the most current release level of IBM Java for AIX 6.0 (at the time the ifix is created).

During the IBM Java for AIX 6.0 support extension, valid IBM customers must continue to use their normal support channels to open support calls and obtain support.

In cases where IBM Java for AIX is bundled with non IBM products (other vendor solutions), clients should contact their vendor first to confirm that their product has been certified and tested with the newer IBM Java for AIX 6.0 release.

Uninstall

At the end of the IBM Java for AIX 6.0 service extension, if it has been determined that IBM Java for AIX 6.0 is no longer required and can be removed, please follow the instructions on this web page to uninstall IBM Java:

IBM Java for AIX 6.0 Dependencies

At the time of the end of support for IBM Java for AIX 6.0, an AIX update will be provided that will remove IBM Java for AIX 6.0 dependencies in AIX 6.1 and 7.x components.

When AIX customers perform a new overwrite operating system installation, the PATH variable in /etc/environment file will have references to IBM Java for AIX 6.0 (/usr/java6 or /usr/java6_64) removed, then updated with 64-bit IBM Java for AIX 7.0 (/usr/java7_64).

When AIX customers perform an update_all operation or operating system migration, a system administrator with root access will be required to manually change the PATH variable in /etc/environment to /usr/java7_64.

Once the changes have been made and there are no additional software dependencies, IBM Java for AIX 6.0 can then be uninstalled. This will be documented in the latest AIX version Release Notes.

To uninstall IBM Java for AIX 6.0, refer to the "Uninstall" section above.
