Troubleshooting VIOS Snap Command Issues

Troubleshooting

Problem

Problem with snap command on Virtual I/O Server (VIOS)

Symptom

padmin snap command hangs or fails

Cause

This technote discusses the most frequently causes for snap failures on a VIOS and troubleshooting approach if the command is believed to be hung.

Environment

PowerVM Virtual I/O Server 2.2 or higher

Diagnosing The Problem

Determine your VIOS level. Login as padmin and run:
$ ioslevel
Then, see Part 3 of this technote for known issues.  If they are not applicable to your VIOS level, see Resolving the problem for further investigation regarding:

  1. snap hangs or
  2. snap fails

Resolving The Problem

Part 1 - snap hangs

Refer to Troubleshooting a Hung Process or Command on PowerVM Virtual I/O Server.

Part 2 - snap fails

By default, padmin snap command will create 2 compressed files in /tmp and /home file systems:
    /tmp/ibmsupt/snap.pax.Z and
    /home/padmin/snap.pax.Z
Therefore, these file systems must have enough free space to hold the snap data.
Ensure /tmp and /home are at 50% Used or less. This percentage seems to work for most environments. To check filesystem space, run:
$ df -g
For more details, see Diagnosing Full File Systems in PowerVM VIOS.

If file system space is not an issue, reproduce the snap failure as outlined in Capturing Debug Output of padmin CLI.

Part 3 - Known Issues

  • 1. IZ90550 ERRDEMON NOT RESTARTED AFTER SNAP EXECUTED at VIOS 2.2.0.10-FP24 and 2.2.0.11-FP24 SP-01.

    • Recommendation
      This issue is fixed in the following ioslevels
      • 2.2.0.12-FP24 SP-02 and 2.2.0.13-FP24 SP-03 with IZ89453
      • 2.2.1.1 (FP25) and 2.2.1.3 (FP25 SP01) with IZ90315
      Update VIOS to any of these or higher levels.

    2. IZ90486 SNAP SVCOLLECT HANGS GATHERING VASI DATA at VIOS 2.2.0.10-FP24 and 2.2.0.11-FP24 SP-01.

    • Recommendation
      This issue is fixed in the following ioslevels
      • 2.2.0.12-FP24 SP-02 and 2.2.0.13-FP24 SP-03 with IZ90645
      • 2.2.1.1 (FP25) and 2.2.1.3 (FP25 SP01) with IZ91752
      Update VIOS to any of these or higher levels.

    3. IV53574 SNAP -AC HANGS ON GATHERING SVCOLLECT DATA in VIOS 2.2.3.1
    This only applies to VIOS 2.2.3.1 if the VIOS has a virtual optical device and snap command is invoked.

    To check if the VIOS has a virtual optical device (vtopt#) configured, login to the VIOS as padmin and run:

  • $ lsmap -all |grep -i backing     ->The Backing device type can be an optical device (cd0) or a fileback device (/var/vio/VMLibrary/<ISO_file>) as shown below:

    Backing device        /var/vio/VMLibrary/AIX61_TL9_Vol2

    or
    Backing device        /dev/cd0

    Alternatively, you can redirect lsmap output to a file. Then view it (i.e. vi editor) and search for VMLibrary or cd:
    $ lsmap -all|tee lsmap.out
    $ vi lsmap.out
    To search type / (forward slash) followed by the keyword to search, and hit <Enter>, i.e. /VMLibrary<Enter>

    Sample output of a virtual optical device stanza that is backed by a physical optical device:
    VTD                   vtopt0
    Status                Available
    LUN                   0x8100000000000000
    Backing device        /dev/cd0
    Physloc
    Mirrored              N/A

    Sample output of a virtual optical device stanza that is backed by a fileback (ISO) file in the VIOS Virtual Medial Libary:
    VTD                   vtopt3
    Status                Available
    LUN                   0x8200000000000000
    Backing device        /var/vio/VMLibrary/RHEL-7.4-20170711.0-Server-ppc64le
    Physloc
    Mirrored              N/A

    Recommendation

    IV53574 is included in VIOS level 2.2.3.2 or higher. VIOS 2.2.3 has reached End of Service Pack Support (EoSPS). See PowerVM VIOS Lifecycle Information for more details. IBM recommends updating VIOS to the latest VIOS release available in Fix Central.
