MS Office 10 Powerpoint files may fail to open when stored on zOS file shares being managed by zOS DFS/SMB server, but the last modified time is changed.

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem(Abstract)

In some cases, an attempt to open a MS PowerPoint (.ppt) file in a zOS DFS/SMB share may result in
the following error at the Windows client:

"PowerPoint was unable to open or save this document. Please ensure that you have access privileges to read or write the document and that it is not encrypted."

The file is not opened and the user 'exits' out of PowerPoint. However, the last modification time is changed. From documentation gathered, the modtime is being changed explicitly by MS PowerPoint when the file is closed.

The zOS DFS/SMB server envar _IOE_SMB_SETATTR_OVERRIDE environment variable circumvents this problem.

Symptom

File modification time changed incorrectly. Message "PowerPoint was unable to open or save this document. Please ensure that you have access privileges to read or write the document and that it is not encrypted." is seen at the client from MS OFFICE 10 PowerPoint .
