mkvg fails with 0516-1376, 0516-1397 and 0516-862

Question & Answer

Question

When creating a new volume group the mkvg command fails with 0516-1376, 0516-1397 and 0516-862.

Cause

The mkvg command fails with errors similar to:

mkvg -f VGName hdiskpower18
0516-1376 mkvg: Physical volume contains a VERITAS volume group.
0516-1397 mkvg: The physical volume hdiskpower18, will not be added to the volume group.
0516-862 mkvg: Unable to create volume group.

In this case the disk being used - hdiskpower18 (EMC) was attached to another system running Veritas Volume Manager. The disk has now been presented to AIX and LVM is unable to use it as the owning volume manager is still Veritas

Answer

Use the below command to clear the owning volume manager from the disk and then use the mkvg command again:

chpv -C hdiskpower18

Note: This example uses hdiskpower18 as an example, however, this will apply to all situations where the disk was previously part of OTHER volume managers.
