Please refer to the article found at: http://www.vm.ibm.com/service/news/hcdspace.html for additional details. 1. 15/01/14 The following z/VM 6.2.0, and 6.3.0 service is available in support of the IBM z Systems z13 machine (note z/VM 5.4 is not supported on the z13): - z/VM 6.2 and 6.3 provides support that will enable guests to exploit zEC12 function supported by z/VM on the IBM z13 (z13) with the PTF for APAR VM65577. z/VM support for IBM z13 includes support for: - z/VM supports the following new hardware facilities transparently. New facility bits have been defined that will be passed to a guest and can be tested to determine if a hardware facility is available. A guest can use the STFLE instruction to obtain the facilities list. - Load/Store-on-condition Facility 2 - Load-and-Zero-Rightmost-Byte Facility - Decimal-Floating-Point Packed Conversion Facility - New facility bits have been defined that will be passed to a guest and can be tested to determine if a hardware facility is available. A guest can use the STFLE instruction to obtain the facilities list. These new facility bits are also incorporated into the Live Guest Relocation Domains support. - Updates to monitor records for CPU-Measurement Counter Facility The new Counter Second Version Number value (4) is supported and appropriate counters are collected and stored in the CPU-Measurement Facility Counters monitor record (Domain 5 Record 13). - CPU-Measurement Counter Facility collection enhancement Host exploitation is provided for a new instruction to allow collection of multiple counters simultaneously, when the store-CPU-counter-multiple facility is installed. This is expected to reduce the overhead for collecting CPUMF data for z/VM monitor records. - New I/O related architectures: Support is provided for new I/O related architectures and features of z13 including: - PCI function measurement block enhancements for the RDMA over Converged Ethernet (RoCE) adapter - Dynamic I/O support for new channel path type CS5 (Coupling over PCIe) - Dynamic I/O support for specifying virtual channel IDs (VCHIDs) for HiperSockets (IQD) channels Note, In order to IPL z/VM 620 on a z13, you must have the z/VM 620 PTF for z13 compatibility, UM34521, installed on your z/VM 620 system. Since this PTF is not part of the z/VM 620 installation software, for a new installation of z/VM 620, you will need to perform the installation on a zEC12 or older processor and then install the PTF for hardware compatibility on your z/VM 620 system. Once the PTF PTF is installed you can IPL your z/VM 620 system on your z13. - z/VM 6.2 and 6.3 provides support for the new Crypto Express5S adapter and enhanced domain support With the PTF for APAR VM65577. The new version of DIRECTXA provided by APAR VM65577 requires more directory space on the DASD volume that contains the object directory. An additional 60 bytes per user plus 2 pages for system use is required. The count of users should include each user defined with USER, IDENTITY, or POOL statement. - z/VM 6.3 provides host exploitation support for SMT on IBM z13 with the PTFs for APAR VM65586 and VM65696, which will enable z/VM to dispatch work on up to two threads (logical CPUs) of an IFL processor core. z/VM simultaneous multithreading support is enabled only for IFL processors in a Linux only mode or z/VM mode logical partition. Existing distributions of Linux on z can benefit from SMT exploitation in a z/VM host. The PTF for APARs VM65676 and VM65677 provide stand-alone dump support. z/VM configuration rules for supporting multithreads - Need a Linux mode partition with all IFLs or a VM mode partition - Multithreads are Only supported on IFL processors - Multithreading must be running vertical mode and with the reshuffle dispatcher algorithm. Thus, the SYSTEM CONFIG file must not contain the SRM POLAR HORIZONTAL or SRM DSPWDMethod REBALANCE commands as they conflict with MULTITHREADING ENABLE and the system will come up MT-2 disabled. - z/VM 6.3 multiThreading support is enabled by adding the following statement to SYSTEM CONFIG: MULTITHREADING ENABLE - Use QUERY MT to make sure multithreading is enabled z/VM publications have been updated with the following information: - Information on the new MULTITHREADING statement and changed SRM statement is available in CP Planning and Administration. - Information on new commands (INDICATE MT, QUERY MT, VARY CORE) and changed commands is available in CP Commands and Utilities. - Information on new accounting records (type F) and changed accounting records is available in CP Planning and Administration. - Information on changed VM Dump Tool facilities is available in the Dump Viewing Facility book. - There is one new monitor record, Domain 5 Record 20 - MRPRCMFM - MT CPUMF Counters, and several changed monitor records, see the Migration Guide for the full list - New programming interfaces in CP Programming Services - New trace codes in the Diagnosis Guide - Updates to abends and messages in CP Messages and Codes book - Note: To allow guests in a VM mode partition to have virtual IFLs, the SET VCONFIG MODE and DEFINE CPU commands need to be added to the guest's directory entry or be issued on the guest. For example, if a guest running LINUX on IFL cores is desired, these statements should be added to the guest's directory entry: COMMAND SET VCONFIG MODE LINUX COMMAND DEFINE CPU x TYPE IFL Or these commands should be issued on the guest before Linux is IPLed: SET VCONFIG MODE LINUX DEFINE CPU x TYPE IFL Note that these commands will cause a system reset that will stop any currently running guest operating system. In a LINUX only partition with all IFL cores, none of this customization is needed because all user CPUs default to type IFL. - z/VM 6.3 will support up to 64 logical processors on z13 With the PTFs for APARs VM65586 and VM65696, - 64 cores are supported with multithreading disabled. - 32 cores (up to 2 threads per core) are supported with multithreading enabled. - z/VM V6.3 continues to support up to 32 logical processors on prior machines. - z/VM V6.3 provides Multi-VSwitch Link Aggregation Support with the PTFs for APARs VM65583 and PI21053, allowing a port group of OSA-Express features to span multiple virtual switches within a single z/VM system or between multiple z/VM systems. This enhancement makes it possible to do VSwitch Link Aggregation with OSAs shared with other z/VM logical partitions, lifting the previous restriction of requiring dedicated OSAs. - SMAPI support for Multi-VSwitch Link Aggregation is provided with the PTF for APAR VM65670 - z/VM IOCP support for the z13 with the PTF for APAR VM65568 - Performance ToolKit support for z13 compatibility with the PTF for APAR VM65527 - Performance ToolKit support for z13 simultaneous multithreading with the PTF for APAR VM65529 - Performance ToolKit support for z13 Multi-VSwitch Link Aggregation with the PTF for APAR VM65528 - DirMaint support for enhanced crypto domain support on the z13 with the PTF for APAR VM65588 - VMHCD support for the z13 with the PTF for APAR VM65489.
