Error description

  • FICON CHPID recovery makes automatic updates to affected paths
at VM level, but those events aren't always reflected to guests.

Some FICON CHPID recovery processes make auto-updates (eg. VARY
ON/OFF) to the affected paths at the z/VM level, but VM doesn't
reflect the associated events to potentially affected guests.
This can cause additional manual intervention (eg. VARY ON/OFF)
at the guest level to fully recover the paths in these
    situations.

The purpose of this APAR is to address some of these processes.

Local fix

  • Use manual VARY ON/OFF PATH and DEVICE commands.

During some channel path (CHPID) recovery actions, z/VM takes
automatic recovery actions to bring the CHPIDs back into use.
However, these events are not surfaced to the guest which can
result in manual intervention at the guest level being needed
for those paths to be used by the guests again.

Comments

  • CHPID recovery routines for certain events were updated to
present an indication to the guest so they would also be able
to take needed recovery actions for the specified CHPID.

In particular, when a machine check is received by z/VM
indicating an I/O Resource Accessibility event has occurred,
a similar machine check and associated data is surfaced to
guests which are not exploiting CHPID virtualization (CHPIDV
    OFF).
