    z/VM's current support for Storage Controller Health Messages
    received for DASD devices currently makes no indication to the
    OPERATOR console that the event has occurred. The event is
    simply indicated to any interested or potentially affected
    guest operating system.

Problem conclusion

  • A new message HCP6433I is being created to indicate to the
    OPERATOR console when a storage controller health message is
    received for a device. The new message takes the following
    format:

    HCPSVI6433I Storage controller health message on device RDEV
    HCPSVI6433I MC = cc, TOKEN = dddd, SSID = xxxx, IDENT = iiii

    ABSTRACT:
    New message description for HCP6433I

    BODY:

    HCP6433I      Storage controller health message on device {rdev}
                  MC = mc, TOKEN = tttt, SSID = ssid, IDENT = iiii

    Explanation:

    The storage controller has detected a health condition that
    affects one or more devices. In the message text:

    MC = mc
        The message code indicating the health of the storage
        controller. mc is one of the following:

        01-3F Moderate severity
        40-BF Serious severity
        C0-FF Critical severity

        01 - Device preemptive reconstruct mode
        02 - RAID array rebuild in progress
        03 - RAID array rebuild complete
        04 - Server offline due to error
        05 - Server offline due to service
        06 - Dual servers online
        07 - Device adapter fenced or quiesced
        08 - Device adapter no longer fenced or quiesced
        09 - SFI code activation in progress
        0A - SFI code activation complete
        0B - Host adapter code activation in progress
        0C - Host adapter code activation complete
        0D - Host adapter code recovery in progress
        0E - Host adapter code recovery complete
        0F - Last device adapter reset recovery time is excessive
        10 - PPRC path degraded
        11 - PPRC path no longer degraded
        20 - PPRC secondary controller recovery action
        21 - PPRC secondary controller warmstart recovery action
        22 - PPRC secondary controller failover recovery action
        23 - PPRC secondary controller failback recovery action

        40 - IO operations timing out on PPRC secondary controller
        41 - Data error during media scrub
        42 - Last device adapter reset
        80 - Server multiple warmstarts

        C0 - Pinned nonretryable error on device
        C1 - One or more devices unavailable due to NVS hardware
             failure
        C2 - One or more devices unavailable due to NVS hardware
             offline
        C3 - RAID rank unavailable
        C4 - Last device adapter reset recovery time is excessive

    TOKEN = tttt
        The unique value for this logical storage subsystem (LSS).
        Note that the message issued for each LSS contains the same
        token.

    SSID = ssid
        SSID for this subsystem

    IDENT = iiii
        Variable identifier data based on the message code:

        MC=01, 02, 03 - Rank ID
        MC=07, 08, 0F - Device Adapter ID
        MC=0D, 0E, 10, 11 - Interface ID

    System action:

    If a HYPERSWAP is not in progress, the message is propagated to
    any machine with dedicated or full-pack minidisk access to the
    affected devices.

    If any of the affected devices are HYPERSWAP enabled, the
    message is also logged in an SVMREC.

    User response:

    None.
