Error description

  • This APAR provides infrastructure support for live guest
relocation (LGR) in a single system image (SSI) cluster when a
machine becomes available that includes ESA/390 removal. It
provides support needed for LGR compatibility with future
    machines.

The failing scenario is this. A machine in the SSI cluster
is about to be upgraded to newer model hardware. To do this,
it is expected that critical Linux virtual machines can first
be live guest relocated (LGR) off of the member(s) whose
machine is being upgraded. After the hardware upgrade is
complete, the Linux guest can be moved back to the member
whose hardware was just upgraded. Thus the upgrade is done
without the need to stop critical applications.

The problem is that sometimes the relocation back to the
upgraded hardware will not work. This relocation to the
machine with the newer architecture should be an upgrade,
and therefore the relocation should work.

Problem conclusion

  • The virtual architecture level code has been changed to fix the
ARD comparison problem that causes failure of the relocation
    back to the original member.
