Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: All IBM z14 ZR1 / LR1 D/T3907 running z/VM.  *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:                                         *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: APPLY PTF                                    *
    ****************************************************************
    This APAR will provide support for the IBM z14 ZR1 and IBM z14
    LinuxONE Rockhopper II (Model LR1) - D/T3907 and must be applied
    as part of upgrading z/VM to support the IBM z14 ZR1 / LR1
    D/T3907. This APAR provides changes to CP Monitor in support
    of capacity planning for IBM z14 ZR1 / LR1 D/T3907 and newer
    models.

      NOTE: it is always recommended to apply the compatibility
      APARs to z/VM before upgrading your hardware.

    Migrating z/VM to the IBM z14 ZR1 / LR1 D/T3907:

      The IBM z14 ZR1 / LR1 D/T3907 compatibility PTF for z/VM
      6.4.0 must be installed before moving your z/VM system to
      the IBM z14 ZR1 / LR1 D/T3907. Refer to the Red Alert noted
      in the PSP bucket to avoid IPL problems.

    Installing z/VM on the IBM z14 ZR1 / LR1 D/T3907:

      z/VM V6.4.0 can be installed directly on an IBM z14 ZR1 / LR1
      D/T3907 server with a V640 install image obtained from
      IBM after August 25, 2017. The PTF for APAR VM65639 must
      be applied immediately after installing z/VM.

    SSI Considerations:

      The available PTF for prereq APAR VM65976 provides
      infrastructure support for ESA/390 compatibility mode within
      z/VM V6.2.0, V6.3.0, and V6.4.0, and must be installed on all
      members of an SSI cluster before any z/VM V6.3.0 or V6.4.0
      member of the cluster is run on any IBM z14 model.

    For additional details see the PSP bucket: 3907DEVICE
    3907/ZVM subset.

Problem conclusion

Temporary fix

  • FOR RELEASE VM/ESA CP/ESA R640 :
    PREREQ: VM65942 VM65615 VM65993
    CO-REQ: NONE
    IF-REQ: NONE

Comments

  • A new field has been added to z/VM Monitor record MRMTRSYS
    (Domain 1, Record 4) to report the new Max PU value which
    contains a model dependent unsigned binary value which
    represents the maximum available processing cores potentially
    available to the system. If this value is 0, the Max PU value
    is not defined for this model.
