    * assemblies and the highest return code *
    * when more than one assembly is *
    *                      performed.                              *

    * completion of the main assembly *
    * processing are not reflected in the *
    *                      jobstep return code.                    *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: Apply the PTF provided *
    ****************************************************************
When performing an assembly using the BATCH option, HLASM
returns the highest return code encountered as the JOBSTEP
return code. At the end of each assembly, HLASM prints out
the return code of that assembly only. This means that at the
end of all the listings, no summary information is printed for
the multiple assemblies. Additionally, any post-processing
performed by a user exit that issues an error message does not
have that error reflected in the JOBSTEP return code.

Problem conclusion

Temporary fix

Comments

  • HLASM has been modified to produce a new summary line at the
end of all batch assemblies which contains the number of
assemblies that took place and the highest overall return
code from those assemblies. HLASM has also been modified to
propagate a return code issued during post processing by an
OBJECT exit to the JOBSTEP return code.
    The "High Level Assembler for z/OS & z/VM & z/VSE
    Programmmer's Guide Release 6" publication (SC26-4941-05)
    will be updated as follows:

--- START OF DOC UPDATES ---

Chapter 7 will be updated. The section Batch assembling
will be updated after the sentence

"If the END statement is omitted from the last program in
the sequence, an END statement will be generated by the
assembler." to add a new sentence

"When the BATCH option is specified and more than one
assembler program exists in the sequence, a summary line
will be printed after the final assembly listing summarising
the number of assembler programs in the sequence and the
highest return code from the assemblies."

--- END OF DOC UPDATES ---
