APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • When CSSMTP sends the MAIL FROM or RCPT TO commands, there is a
blank space between the > and the CRLF. This is causing some
target servers to flag this as a syntax error and fail the mail.
    .
KEYWORDS: undeliverable 501 #5.5.2 syntax error
    .
    VERIFICATION STEPS:
CSSMTP log will show the server fails the mail with:
    501 #5.5.2 syntax error 'mail from: <user@Mdomain.origin> '
Note the blank space after the >
    .
A packet trace will confirm CSSMTP is sending a blank space
after the > and before the CRLF.

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Trailing blank after the ">" character *
    * caused target server to reject MAIL *

    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
The CSSMTP application added a trailing blank after the mailbox
string in the SMTP MAIL FROM: and RCPT TO: commands.
Although most SMTP servers tolerate extra whitespace as long as
it does not appear within the mailbox string this target server
did not. The following can be seen in the CSSMTP log file:

    501 #5.5.2 syntax error 'mail from: <user@Mdomain.origin> '
Note the blank space after the >

    blank.
