Error description

  • Customer was attempting to test a failure of connectivity to the
    secondary PPRC volumes. The expected behavior was HSIB should
    recognize the loss from one system and maintain hyperswap
    enablement with message:
    IOSHM0803E HyperSwap enabled with limited capability .
    -
    The expected wto was issued, however the display
    commands did not reflect any indication of limited
    enablement.
    -
    D HS,CONFIG command did show Indicate 1 SYSTEMS IMPACTED.
    -
    The customer is looking for a better set of display commands
    to properly reflect this condition where HSIB is LIMITED by
    one or more systems and which system(s) are limited?
    -
    The message:
    IOSHM0806I Unable to verify PPRC secondary device connectivity
    was periodically displayed on the system which lost the
    connectivity.

Local fix

  • Look for message IOSHM0806I on one or more systems to find
    which system lost connectivity.
    D HS,CONFIG(DETAIL)
    will show the detail on each of the individual systems as to
    where the connectivity is lost.

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: HyperSwap status in DISPLAY message *
    *                      MSGIOSHM0303I does not always indicate  *
    * the correct enablement status and may *
    *                      not be consistent with MSGIOSHM0803E    *
    *                      and MSGIOSHM0805I messages              *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    HyperSwap status in DISPLAY HS,STATUS command response
    (MSGIOSHM0303I) does not always indicate the correct enablement
    status and may not be consistent with IOSHM0803E and IOSHM0805I
    messages.

    -MSGIOSHM0303I indicates HyperSwap is enabled when the loss of
     connectivity to the secondary devices in the configurations
     causes HyperSwap to have limited enablement

    -In a multi-target HyperSwap configuration when connectivity
     is lost to secondary devices in a configuration, however, there
     remains one configuration with connectivity from all systems,
     MSGIOSHM0303I indicates HyperSwap is enabled but message
     MSGIOSHM0803E is issued indicating limited availability.

    -The disablement reasons in the MSGIOSHM0303I response to the
     DISPLAY HS,STATUS command are not always shown correctly
     when a system has lost connectivity to the secondary devices
     or when one or more HyperSwap configurations are loaded,
     however no configuration is capable of HyperSwap.

Problem conclusion

  • Correct the reporting of the HyperSwap enablement status as
    follows:

    -Ensure that the HyperSwap status indicated by MSGIOSHM0303I
     indicates limited enablement when one or more systems has lost
     connectivity to the secondary devices of the configuration to
     be used for HyperSwap.

    -In a multi-target HyperSwap configuration when connectivity
     is lost to secondary devices in a configuration, however,
     there remains one configuration with connectivity from all
     systems and capable of HyperSwap, ensure that MSGIOSHM0803E
     is not issued.

    -Update MSGIOSHM0303I response to the DISPLAY HS,STATUS to
     provide the appropriate disablement reason when a system has
     lost connectivity to the secondary devices or when one or more
     HyperSwap configurations are loaded, however no configuration
     is capable of HyperSwap.
