This APAR delivers the SMF in-memory resource feature and the
SMF real-time interface, an Application Programming Interface
(API) to access SMF data in memory as the data is generated.

Comments

  • A summary of the new functions provided by this APAR appears
below. Complete documentation can be found at:
       http://publibz.boulder.ibm.com/zoslib/pdf/OA49263.pdf

    About SMF in-memory resources:

An SMF in-memory resource is a wrap-around buffer that
keeps selected records in memory and provides real-time access
to those records. You can specify the size when you define an
    in-memory resource.

SMF must be running in logstream recording mode in order to
define and use in-memory resources and, thus, the real-time
interface. Records can be recorded to an in-memory resource
and may or may not also be written to a logstream depending on
    the configuration.

The SMF in-memory resource function is comprised of:
    - SMFPRMxx updates
Use the INMEM keyword to define an in-memory resource
to record SMF records in memory for real-time
      resource analysis.

    - SAF resource updates
To use SMF in-memory resources, you must also define
a SAF resource in the FACILITY class to protect the
in-memory resource. Refer to the publications at the
link above for details on the defining the SAF
      resource.

    - DISPLAY SMF
Use the DISPLAY SMF,M command to display the in-memory
resources and the connections to them.

The SMF Real-Time Interface is comprised of the following:
    - SMF real-time callable services
IFAMCON - Connect to an SMF in-memory resource
IFAMGET - Obtain data from an SMF in-memory resource
IFAMDSC - Disconnect from an SMF in-memory resource
IFAMQRY - Query SMF in-memory resources

More details can be found in the publications at the
    link given above.

At z/OS 2.2 only, this APAR corrects a possible skipped
recording of a synchronized SMF interval following a
processor capacity change, if the processor capacity
change occurs within a minute of the end of the
    interval.
