Error description

  • After installation of PTFs for OA39870 some extended format data
    sets will experience various read errors after writing data to a
    data set that causes the hurba value to exceed 2Gb.

    Data sets that are affected are DB2 logs, Websphere MQ logs,
    IMS FP DEDBs that are extended format and larger than 2Gb.

    In the reported case DB2 received the following messages:

    DSNJ106I  PB2B LOG READ ERROR  167
    DSNAME=PB2BV.LOGCOPY1.DS02, LOGRBA=BF4DCD66D000, ERROR
    STATUS=00500E10

    The error status indicates that Media Manager found an invalid
    value in the extended suffix data.

    MQ errors received:
    CSQJ106E *QMD2 LOG READ ERROR  613
    DSNAME=MSMQ.QMD2.LOGCOPY1.DS05, LOGRBA=1C65C7CB6000, ERROR
    STATUS=00500E10
    CSQJ124E *QMD2 OFFLOAD OF ACTIVE LOG SUSPENDED FROM 640
    RBA 1C65C7CB6000 TO RBA 1C65D46BDFFF DUE TO I/O ERROR

    IMS errors that could be received:
    DFS2571 (00500E10) READ ERROR ON LONG BUSY ADS
    You may also see DFS2524I, DFS2573I and DFS2605I.

    You may also see the following errors:
    IDC3302I  ACTION ERROR ON MSMQ.QMD2.LOGCOPY1.DS05
    IDC3350I 13153,20533708,00008003F000,D,MQL01F,M961BWLG,COPY
    ,309A,DA,INF       ,SFX001,INVALID SUFFIX,0000479A000D0c,VSAM
    IDC3302I  ACTION ERROR ON MSMQ.QMD2.LOGCOPY1.DS05
    IDC3317I ** PERMANENT I/O ERROR

Local fix

  • Remove PTFs for OA39870

    OTHER COMMENTS: This APAR fixes a problem found in the "RBA
    interface." DB2 and MQ logs and IMS Fast Path DEDB's use
    this "RBA interface" - when they write to these data sets they
    pass and RBA value.

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: DB2, IMS Fastpath DEDB, Websphere MQ users *
    * (all supported releases) that have data sets *
    * defined as extended format (DSNTYPE=EXT in *
    * the data class) that are greater than 2 GB *
    *                 in size with OA39870 applied (for z/OS 1.12  *
    *                 and 1.13) or are running base z/OS 2.1.      *
    * Other applications that use Media Manager *
    * with ACCESS=RBA are also affected if they *
    * allow extended format data sets and they are *
    *                 greater than 2 GB.                           *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: With OA39870 (which is toleration *
    *                      maintenance for 2.1) and customers      *
    *                      running base z/OS 2.1, we changed the   *
    * suffix for extended format data *
    * sets to contain a 64 bit ci value. *
    * However the MMRE mapping defined a *
    * related value as a signed pointer *
    * value so whenever the RBA of a block *
    *                      exceeds x'7FFFFFFF' we are              *
    * dropping the high order bit. This *
    * resulting relative CI number is stored *
    * in the suffix. This suffix value *
    * is used to verify that a *
    * read has read the correct block. *
    * This causes the blocks beyond 2GB *
    *                      to be unreadable.                       *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************

Problem conclusion

  • the definition of the MMRE field is corrected to use an unsigned
    32 bit field. all affected modules are recompiled.
