Error description

  • ICYTRACE records created by Media Manager - IOSB indicates x'41'
permanent I/O error and sense data x'0040' invalid track format.
    .
PUT request being processed and rejected, each PUT results in
ICYTRACE record being created - due to permanent I/O error which
is due to "invalid track format."

The cluster is defined with a CIsize of 32768 and a physical
record size of 16384 - meaning it takes 2 physical records to
hold a CI (this is OK). However, the channel program that is
created results in every track NOT having the same layout (some
tracks have 3 blocks and some tracks have 2 blocks - and this
causes the last track of each CA to be short). A requirement
for high-performance FICON (zHPF) multi-track is every track
    must have the same layout.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
This apar will also address similar issues in the non-zHPF path.
A symptom of such error includes command reject x'8000'

Local fix

  • Change cluster definition so CIsize and physical record size are
    the same.
Put data set on non zHPF DASD.

Missing LOCATE RECORD CCW in channel program causes fault.

Problem conclusion

  • A LOCATE RECORD CCW is inserted in the channel program when
accessing contiguous blocks across a control area boundary
where the last track of the control area is shorter than
the other tracks in the control area. This CCW is inserted only
when we are accessing the last CI of one CA and the first CI of
    the next CA.
