OA12005: PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENT FOR THE EWLM INSTRUMENTATION OF DB2 DDF

APAR status

  • Closed as new function.

Error description

  • New Function
The existing EWLM instrumentation in DB2 DDF reduces the DB2
throughput considerably. The internal throughput reduction is
caused by the increased granularity of instrumentation on the
network flow level and the additional pathlength in the WLM
    services.

    ****************************************************************
WLM must provide a lightweight version of the EWLM Enclave
services with a limited functionality for environments like
DB2 DDF where the pathlength of the full-functional WLM services
is too long compared to the actual application pathlength.

This APAR must also support Virtualization Engine EWLM V2.1.0
(Program Numbers 5655-EWM and 5655-S01) by providing a higher
precision (MicroSeconds instead of MilliSeconds) for measured
response times, blocked times and queue times.

The following problems will also be fixed:
    - A problem in EWLM function ewlm_get_completions, where
the function may return an undocumented internal function
      code -4011
    - A problem in IWMWMWRS when a correlator of length > 64 Bytes
is passed in the classification parameter list (EWLM_CORR).
This error can result in an ABEND1C7,REASON=03520019

Comments

  • OA12005 supports two new options for the ESTRT keyword on the
    IWMECREA/IWM4ECRE service: ESTRT=EXPLICIT_SINGLE | NEVER.
For all EWLM related Enclave services (IWMESTRT, IWMESTOP,
IWMEBLK, IWMEUBLK, IWMEGCOR) a new keyword EWLMMODE was
introduced, that allows to select the restricted lightweight
version of the services or the full functional implementation.

New modules IWMW2EFE and IWMW2EFP implement the lightweight
version of the services with a dramatically reduced pathlength
compared to the full-blown version of the services.
The new module IWMA3RQH implements the asynchronous handler for
the terminated transactions that writes the completion records
    to the EWLM completion buffer.

Module IWMA3QSC and several internal methods were changed to
support the VE EWLM 2.1.0 interface changes. Moreover the
C header files EWLMPLAT, EWLMPOLS and EWLMPLOS were updated
to support the EWLM V2.1.0 interface changes.

The z/OS V1R7.0 MVS Programming: Workload Management Services
book (SA22-7619-10) is affected by this APAR (changes to
IWMECREA, IWMESTRT, IWMESTOP, IWMEBLK, IWMEUBLK, IWMEGCOR,
IWM4ECRE services). The V1R7 softcopy of the manual is refreshed
and available on the Internet at:
    http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/zseries/zos/bkserv/
The V1R6 online manuals are no longer updated, but the changes
are exactly identical to the V1R7 version, so V1R6 customers can
also refer to the V1R7 manuals.
