APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • If filesystem corruption causes the root filesystem to be
deleted, the lost+found directory cannot be created to
collect disconnected inodes.
The filesystem cannot be mounted, nor can any of the
inode
scans be done.

Local fix

  • 



Problem summary


    

  • Root inode with fatal issues causes complete loss of
filesystem data which is not recoverable even by fsck.
Though fsck promptly discovers the filesystem tree under
the root as orphan it is not able to move them to lost+found
as the lost+found itself resides under root which is not
accessible.

    



Problem conclusion


    

  • Fix the problem by recreating a root directory and a
lost+found underneath it and move the discovered
orphans under the newly created lost+found.
