IZ69535: LOGGER COMMAND FAILS WHEN LOGGING A LARGE BATCH OF MESSAGES APPLIES TO AIX 5300-10

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• When the "logger" command is used to log a number
  of messages in rapid sequence, particularly when
  that is done in a single invocation, as with input
  from a file or from stdin, then it will often
  fail after sending just a few dozen of those messages
  to syslog.
  
  The format of the error message seen is:
  
  Could not send msg
  <actual-text-in-line-it-failed-to-send>
  . Please retry
  

Local fix

• Invoke logger for no more than 8-20 messages at a time
  with a delay or explicit in between.
  

Problem summary

• logger command fails after sending few messages to syslog.
  When logging a large batch of messages.
  

Problem conclusion

• If syslog_r() fails with errno ENOBUFS or EAGAIN retry
  sending message to syslog after some delay.
