IZ66883: CHDEV WITH -P FLAG CHANGES RESERVATION_POLICY ON THE DISK APPLIES TO AIX 5300-11

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• When the chdev command with -P flag is used to alter the
  reserve_policy only in the ODM database it also updates
  the
  value on the disk.
  
  This could cause other hosts sharing the disk to get
  reservation conflict errors.
  

Local fix

Problem summary

• When chdev command is run with -P flag to change
  reserve_policy of a disk from PR_exclusive or PR_shared to
  single_path or no_reserve, the disk is actually opened and
  PR CLEAR command is sent (even though -P flag implies only
  Database change).  This may lead to RESERVATION CONFLICT if
  the disk is shared by another host.
  

Problem conclusion

• chdev command modified so that PR CLEAR command is sent to
  disk only when the host has reservation on the disk or has
  registered key.
  Note: If the host has reservation or registerd key, PR CLEAR
  will be sent even with -P flag. This cannot be avoided because
  stale reservation or keys cannot be left behind.
