Error description

  • **************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED:
    * Systems running the AIX 7200-01 Technology Level
    * with devices.capi.1410f0041410f004.com below the 7.2.1.1
    * level.
    **************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
    * With the CAPI adapter (FC EJ17 and EJ18), if an
    * EEH (Extended Error Handling) condition happens, there is a
    * very small timing window where the application may read
    * incorrect data from a CAPI device possibly resulting in
    * undetected data loss.
    *
    * An EEH condition can occur during adapter firmware update or
    * CAPI bus errors.
    **************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:
    * Install APAR IV91922.
    * Prior to fix availability, an interim fix is available from
    * either
    * ftp://aix.software.ibm.com/aix/ifixes/iv91922/
    * https://aix.software.ibm.com/aix/ifixes/iv91922/
    * The ifix can be installed using Live Update (LU).
    * If LU is not used, installation of the ifix requires a
    * reboot.
    **************************************************************

Local fix

  • If you don't use the CAPI device during a firmware update,
    it will reduce the risk of seeing this problem.

Problem summary

  • When an EEH condition is discovered, there is a very small
    timing window where the CAPI adapter driver completes I/O
    requests to the upper layers by clearing the SUE error in
    the user buffer. This could cause the upper layers to read
    the wrong data from a CAPI device.

Problem conclusion

  • Fix the command processing path in CAPI adapter device driver
    to not clear the user buffer during EEH recovery condition.
