Error description

  • If we have the following conditions:
    1) JFS2 filesystem has mount guard turned on
    2) JFS2 filesystem has been corrupted in some way
    3) JFS2 filesystem has been cleanly unmounted

On a remount attempt you will get the following error
    message indication
    filesystem may still be mounted:

    Cannot mount guarded filesystem.
The filesystem is potentially mounted on another node.

This should not be outputted since the filesystem has
    been cleanly unmounted
and is not mounted on another node.

Instead an error message concerning the fact there is FS
    corruption
and fsck needs to be run should be outputted.

This has been confusing analysis of root cause in HACMP
    problems
    and flash copy problems.

Local fix

  • Only workaround is to turn mount guard off which is not
    recommended.

Problem summary

  • On attempting to remount a corrupted filesystem after a clean
unmount, an incorrect error message implying that the
filesystem is still mounted is displayed if the filesystem has
    "mount guard" turned on.

Problem conclusion

  • After successful unmount, complete cleanup operations in all
    cases.
