Error description

  • This affects only specific Power8 ethernet adapters:
    PCIe2 2-Port 10GbE Base-T Adapter.
    PCIe2 4-Port (10GbE SFP+ & 1GbE RJ45) Adapter
    .
When the adapter is in promiscuous mode and an
adapter reset occurs, network packets will no longer
be received, though transmits can still work.
    .
This has been primarily seen on VIOS systems using
SEA (Shared Ethernet Adapter) on top of this adapter.
    .
When SEA failover happens and the SEA transitions
from Primary to Backup, it performs an adapter reset
    on the physical adapter.
This can cause the physical adapter to stop receiving
packets, which will effectively disconnect the VIOS and
all VIO client LPARs from the external network.

Local fix

  • This can be safely avoided by changing the SEA
behavior to not issue the adapter reset on failover:
    > chdev -l <sea device> -a adapter_reset=no
This will not affect SEA failover functionality as long
as the default backup RARP method is enabled:
    > chdev -l <sea device> -a send_RARP=yes
Set adapter_reset attribute of SEA to "no" to avoid
the port being reset by SEA.

Problem summary

  • Configuring adapter(FC#EN0S and FC#EN0W) as a SEA for a VIOS
and with ctrl_chan attribute.adapter stops working, ping fails

Problem conclusion

  • Changes were made to the adapter driver to work normally
after an adapter reset is issued.
