Error description

  • IPTRACE incorrectly removes the TAP created by another
application. This causes the other application to stop
    receiving packets or no response.
In this case, the problem was seen if iptrace was started
and stopped when IBM Load Balancer is run on AIX.
When iptrace stops it removes the TAP created by Load
balancer and it stops receiving packets delivered to that
    host.
The problem can also been seen if tcpdump and iptrace
are run together on the same AIX.

    1) Start tcpdump
    2) Start iptrace
    3) Stop iptrace
    4) tcpdump will stop sniffing packets on the host.

Local fix

  • Run,

    # iptrace -u
    several times until

    iptrace unloaded messages are seen

Restart the tcpdump or application (load balancer).

Do not use iptrace with tcpdump or load balancer.

Problem summary

  • tcpdump or any other packet sniffing applications will stop
receiving packets, if iptrace is started and stopped.

Problem conclusion

  • iptrace code is modified to retain any existing filters that
were added by other packet sniffing applications.
