Error description

  • When the sb_max setting is changed to less than 600000,
    the
NFS socket falls back to the default value of 61K for the
socket send/recv sizes. This can cause NFS IO errors when
using the (default) 64K read/write block sizes.

NFS errors such as the following could be seen:

NFS write error on host abchost.net: 78.

The iptrace data will indicate that there are no NFS IO
(read/write) calls going over the wire at the time of the
    error.

Local fix

  • Either
    - Figure out why we get to fallback socket size
    (maybe sb_max < nfs_tcp_socketsize, isno options)
    ) and correct that
    or
    - Reduce read or write size,

Problem summary

  • Writing to a file in NFS FS may fail with error 78 if
sb_max value is set to less than nfs_tcp_socketsize
value (provided it is more than the nfs_max_write_size)

The iptrace data will indicate that there are no NFS IO
(read/write) calls going over the wire at the time of the
    error.

Problem conclusion

  • Correct the fallback socketsize value to allow NFS write
packets of default size to be sent out over the wire.
