Error description

  • An etherchannel in 802.3ad mode that also has a backup
adapter plus address to ping set up will usually fail
over to the backup adapter when one of the adapters is
removed using DAM. Even if alternate MAC address is set
and being used, the removal can often trigger a loss of
connectivity longer than 3 seconds which results in the
etherchannel failing over to the backup adapter.

It has also been observed that a fail over to backup can
occur when adding an adapter via DAM.

Local fix

  • Setting the AIX etherchannel timeout to short helps
because it causes the switch to send LACP packets every
second. Then the address to ping settings can be
lengthened to 8 or 10 seconds and this tends to avoid
the fail over to the backup but there is still packets
being lost until the switch discovers the adapter has
    been removed.

Problem summary

  • An etherchannel in 802.3ad mode may cause disrupt in network
communication when a port is removed from the aggregation
    using DAM.

Problem conclusion

  • Etherchannel driver is modified to avoid LACP re-negotiation
when port under aggregation is removed.
