Error description

  • An SCIOLSTART of a target port may fail with EIO error if
there is already an existing target_info for that target.
This can happen if an SCIOLSTART is issued from an NPIV
client, after the target port has been moved to another
    physical SAN switch port.

When the request to log in to the target port is received
on the VIOS, only the scsi_id value is provided. This
scsi_id is the new location of the storage, versus the
old, and gets treated as a new device. During device
initialization, the protocol driver discovers the storage
WWPN, and now finds an existing entry in its device
    tables.

This causes a duplicate target_info structure, so the
SCIOLSTART is failed back to the vfchost adapter.
However, the error returned is an EIO versus an ESTALE,
so the EIO error is passed back up to the client,
instead of the vfchost adapter initiating recovery.

storage port with no LUNs started from the port.

Problem conclusion

  • Code changed to avoid the issue.
